the verdict after my belt snapped...w/a twist

here is what was on my service report:

"TOWED IN. VEHICLE HAS NO STEERING ASSIST. ENVELOPE REPORTS BELT BROKE. CHECK AND ADVISE.

INSPECTED UNDERHOOD AND FOUND ALTERNATOR DRIVE BELT SEPARATED AND DAMAGED POWER STEERING PULLEY. SUBMITTED PUMA CASE#9157829 BECAUSE NO VISIBLE CAUSE COULD BE FOUND TO SUBSTANTIATE WHY BELT CAME OFF. PUMA STATED TO INSPECT FOR REMOVAL OF SHIPPING SPACERS AND BINDING OF ANY DRIVE COMPONENTS RELATED TO BELT. INSPECTED AND FOUND NO SHIPPING SPACERS INSTALLED ON VEHICLE. ROTATED AND CHECKED ALL PULLEYS, TENSIONER, ALTERNATOR, A/C COMPRESSOR, AND POWER STEERING PUMP. NO BINDING OR PLAY WAS PRESENT. PUMA STATED TO REPLACE ALL DAMAGED COMPONENTS AND REPORT BACK WITH PICTURES FOR FURTHER INVESTIGATION ON CAUSE. REPLACED ALTERNATOR DRIVE BELT AND POWER STEERING PUMP PULLEY. REPLIED TO PUMA WITH PICTURE OF POWER STEERING PUMP PULLEY. TEST DROVE WITH SHOP FOREMAN. ALL SYSTEMS OPERATING NORMALLY AT THIS TIME."

Minor additional detail, there was a new scratch on the left rear quarter panel (and a chunk of the car wash felt in the right rear panel). When I first confronted them they blamed the tow company. I told them I really didn't care whose fault it was, the scratch wasn't there when I brought it in (car has all of 782 mi on it), so please have it taken care of. They said they would address it with the tow company and get back to me by Wed. Stay tuned...

Any thoughts on either???

sucks, my dealer dented my rear quarter pannel, and they finally agreed to fix it...i ended up having my dent wizard buddy take care of it, and i paid it. Any chance I get to avoid the dealer, I do. In your case, a scratch is more of a pain...good luck, and good tat the car is working again

Sorry about your problem, but why start another thread on the same issue?

i think they wanted to think that if the shipping spacers were on and the car hit a pothole or something and got jostled that it would cause the damage, but that wasn't the case here. Matt called it. I think it isn't necessarily common but isn't the first one to happen either.

Power steering pump pulley disintegration:

2007 335i 6 speed
September 8 2006 build
HP fuel pump replaced at 3800 miles in December
Belt separated and lodged in fan Friday around 6000 miles
Other pulleys show damage
Mysterious oil leak started at the same time, hard to detect source since belt flung it all over
Tech thinks it may be the main front seal

He claims the power steering pump pulley disintegrating and ripping up the back of the belt is becoming a common problem

I was very concerned if damage was related to the work that was done for replacing the high pressure fuel pump

The tech was clueless about the pump, where it was or the procedure for replacing it.

my belt has now snapped TWICE in less than a month!!!
Luckily both times happened either just after I got off, or was about to get onto the freeway.

Sounds like there's something else wrong with your car that's causing belts to shred. It doesn't seem to be a common 335i problem, or not that I've read anyway.

john, you bet there's something wrong with my car:

it was manufactured in 12/06; mass production started in feb 07
i was NOT informed the vehicle was used at the largest autoshow in North America as a display vehicle, with thousands of individuals getting in and out of it. I uncovered this as a result of the forums.

mechanically:
two separate roof leaks at two different times
two power steering pullys cracked and serpentine belts destroyed
car delivered without rear seat cup holders
car delivered with non-functional bmw assist
car delivered with non-functional power to the dashboard lighter
threading on roof lining is starting to show wear and tear
significant clicking noise when roof was raised

car has been in the shop more than 40 days since I've had it since june, and counting.

I found this on an earlier post.

E82, E88 (1 Series) with N54 engine up to 4/08

E90, E92, E93 (3 Series) with N54 engine up to 4/08 except xi models

SIB 11 09 08

The models listed above utilize a single serpentine drive belt for the power steering pump, alternator, and air conditioner compressor. During normal driving, the front engine mounts allow the engine to move slightly on the front axle carrier. However, under extreme conditions, such as driving at high rates of speed over curbs or speed bumps, the engine movement can result in the serpentine belt or power steering pump pulley contacting the front engine carrier. If this occurs, the belt and/or pump pulley could be damaged.

PROCEDURE
When diagnosing a complaint related to a broken drive belt or a drive belt which has come off the pulleys, it is important to carefully examine the power steering pump pulley for any signs of damage.

If there is no damage to the pulley, continue with normal troubleshooting.

If the pulley is chipped or cracked, then the pulley and the belt must be replaced.

In cases where the pulley has been damaged, the front axle carrier should be examined for any signs of contact in the area below the power steering pump pulley.

If the axle carrier has any sign of contact, then the carrier must be replaced. For E90, E92, and E93 vehicles produced up to 3/19/07 which require replacement of the front axle carrier, the left side engine support (P/N 22 11 6 760 317) must also be installed.
