I'd like to get a 335i coupe or sedan this fall but wife hates the tiny cupholders...

And I must agree with her - we checked out a 335i coupe convertible at the car show a couple months ago and the germans must believe that we here in the US only drink 12 ounce coke cans and 16.9 ounce slim bottles because that's about all it looks like it'll hold.

No would I really let cup holders stop me from getting the car I really want? No. But I'd like to keep my wife happy, and you know how women can latch on to the smallest details and refuse to let go.

A guy on another forum told me they used to make some sort of cupholder extensions or replacements that you could buy for the 3-series that would make the cupholders able to hold a much larger cup.

Is that still the case? Is there still an accessory or option from the dealer for this purpose?

Oh, also I only saw the cup holders in the coupe - are they any better in size in the sedan? I'm pretty open to either configuration.

If youre driving the car, have your wife in the passenger seat hold out her hands. Instant cup holders!

I like my cupholders just fine... until I put a cup in one. Start from a stop and it looks like the cup is going to fall out. I'm used to it, but it freaks my wife out sitting in the passenger seat. Just make sure any lid is sealed properly.

No problems with 12 oz. cans.

This is primarily going to be her vehicle. She likes the 335i except for the cupholders. I'm asking if there's an accessory that would expand the holding capacity of the stock cup holders - since I was told there at least used to be by a guy on another forum.

I'm not sure what's so crazy about that question or what would indicate that I'm trolling.

I think the cupholder in the armrest has the largest capacity and is also the most sturdy.

U gotta use some subtle chick psych on her man.

"Yes, hon, the cupholders are rather smallish but chalk it up to poor customer surveying by BMW, because their studies showed that their typical female buyers are younger and thinner like you and prefer the slimmer cupholders."

LOL - that's pretty brilliant. I may actually drive some derivative of that.

My wife's minivan has scads of cupholders. And good one's, too. When I'm driving it, I have no less than four different places I can put my drink.

The cupholders in my 335i suck. I've even had one launch an empty water bottle into my wife's lap while she was staring out the window daydreaming. It scared the holy bejesus out of her and cracked me up for a good five minutes.

My point? Your wife should get a Toyota Sienna and drive in cupholder heaven. Ok, that's a joke. But if this is to be your wife's car and she would buy something else rather than endure the crappy cupholders, I'm thinking maybe you could save some money by buying a less capable (but more comfortable) car that she would be perfectly happy with. Just a thought.

If a lack of cupholders stop you from buying a BMW - you are not a BMW driver and should not buy one.

This is an ultimate driving machine.

I wish BMW would remove all the cupholders and stop making automatic transmissions for 3-series, so people who don't belong driving a BMW wouldn't buy one and buy something esle with cupholders

I think an aftermarket vendor could/should come up with a deeper, wider and sturdier version of the pop out cupholders.

Got the story on the cup holders, while going to business schools a few yrs back, I took a marketing/product development class from the guy who BWM hired to consult with them about this whole cup holder thing.

He said that the German's do not understand the whole cup holder concept. It took him a long time to get them to understand why american like cup holders. Their feeling both hands must stay on the steering wheel at all time, because when your drive 80 to 100 mph you should not be trying to drink.

He explained to them that american generally do not drive 80 to 100 mph, and spend most of their commute in traffic and half a wake thus needing their morning coffee.

Consider ourselves lucky we even have them. Yes they are really bad, I do not use them since I have manual, and you can not drink and shift at the same time.

Grant it, my daughter enjoys playing with them and having her webkinks sit in them.

seriously, how much bigger do the cup holders need to be? only in america do you find cars with cup holders big enough to hold a two liter soda.

Please never start a cup holder thread on this forum, even as a joke. Thank you.
