335i Convertible, a post-production upgrade option?
I am now officially depressed. I just looked at the new Cabrio version and now for the first time since i got it back in january, i am sad that I have a lowly 335i hardtop . I just wanted to throw this out there to see if anyone had the wonderful news that somehow I will be able to chop the top and do this someday to mine. I know its almost impossible, i more just wanted to wine. Isn't that the shame of being a BMW owner, that the only time we can complain is when BMW comes out with a better car!

There's no reason to be depressed. I'm not a big BMW-phile but common sense would dictate that the new 3-series was going to be in sedan, coupe, then convertible, then ///M. If you wanted a convertible you should've waited longer.
As for making a coupe a convertible. You could do it, chop the top, but you'd never be able to have the folding roof origami orgasmic goodness of the hardtop. |

I still think the 3 convertible would have looked better as a soft top. the graceful lines in the 3 coupe are jacked in the convertible. especially the trunk area where they had to crease the trunk to get the top in. Thats just hideous to me. Mercedes knows how to design hardtops best by intergrating the functional lines with the style of the car. It just works.

Mercedes builds hard tops for two seaters. It is a different thing, the area to cover with the roof is shorter, therefore designing the roof is easier.
The e93 is the first example of a 4 seater Coupè-convertible, three-sectioned roof with short windshield pillars and low back line. A beautiful design in my opinion, nearly as neat as the coupè when closed, but turning a relatively anonympus car into a look-at-me-nearly-exotic when opened. Two cars in one is better than two cars in the garage, in terms of costs. If money was not an issue, I would choose a Porsche 997 Carrera S convertible as my open top and an M5 as my "comfortable" car!

Yes, it can easily be done. And then seal all the openings with duct tape and chewing gum and you can use it as a submarine. Attach wings? Whee, you're flying. The possibilities are endless...

wine = chianti, merlot, etc.
Sell your car, bend over and take the depreciation hit (with lubricant if you can), and get the convertible Or do what I'm doing - wait it out a couple years then get one! I agree, I have and always will love convertibles and have been praying BMW would join the hardtop-convertible game. Finally they did, but I couldn't swing the extra money for one so I'll have to wait.

I got the convertible but my guess is that the first year is going to be hideous with reliability issues ion the top. Your getting the coupe and using it for a few years while we idiots deal with the new top is probably the right way to go. Just think - in 2 years when you can sell it and not lose too much the bugs in the top will all be ironed out and it will work as well as my 330cic !!
On the looks issue. I thinkl the coupe is REALLY SHARP and SPORTY looking but the cabriolet is CLASSY looking and the trunk lines to make it fit ........ I love them as I do the trim around the windows. |

Yeah, of course i knew there would be a convertible. But not until AFTER i placed my order with BMW in NOVEMBER did i realize that it would be a hardtop convertible like the sc430 that i fell in love with (and am now disgusted by) when i was like 21 years old . Even then, the reports were showing them in like the 60-70k range possibly and i knew that 50 was my limit. I don't think if i had the choice today, i would pay the extra, i really did just want to WHINE .

To each his own on the vert. styling. I admit the coupe looks better. It's almost always the case that the hardtop *looks* better than the drop top model. But personally I could never own a hard top. (And I thought about it long and hard when the e93 prices came out too). As for the Z4M Roadster, it's a roadster. There is more to life than half a second. |

Disagree - it is reall classy and I think there are lots of folks that would agree. That said I like the contour of the interiof of the 330cic a lot better. But I like the Nav system setup in the 335 better.

When i saw the vert in person the trunk space was very tight. I'm not much of a vert type of person anyway I have a sunroof instead
