My wife was driving the car and as she pulled into the driveway the battery light lit up, and power steering went. Upon further inspection, a belt in the engine snapped.

All I know is that the dealership is in talks with engineers in NJ to diagnose the problem.

It was probably the power steering pulley.

I've seen a couple of those that had a bad cast, and they come apart, and then shred the belt. =(

I work for a certain PC company ;-) I also serve as an Army Reserve Officer (helps to get cars via military sales programs)

wife called me today and said dealer called and nj said to replace a few parts (i'll get details later). when she asked if it was a common problem, she said they said "bmw acknowledges that this has happened before but isn't common..."
