Yes, refer to your manual on how to check the coolant level. Make sure your engine is cold.
Coolant Do not add coolant to the cooling system when the engine is hot. Escaping coolant can cause burns.< Coolant is a mixture of water and an additive. Not all commercially available additives are suitable for your BMW. Ask your BMW center for suitable additives. Only use suitable additives, otherwise engine damage may result. The additives are hazardous to your health.< Comply with the appropriate environmental protection regulations when disposing of coolant additives.< Checking coolant level 1. The engine must be at ambient temperature. 2. Turn the cap of the expansion tank a little counterclockwise to allow any accumulated pressure to escape, then continue turning to open. 3. The coolant level is correct if it is between the maximum and minimum marks in the filler neck, refer also to the diagram next to the filler neck. 4. If the coolant is low, slowly add coolant up to the specified level; do not overfill. 5. Turn the cap until there is an audible click. 6. Have the reason for the coolant loss eliminated as soon as possible.

I think you hit the nail right on the head. Here is your choice, 1) when engine is cold, pop the bonnet and open the radiator cap and see how far the needle stick up (I repeat, you must do this when engine is cold or you will burn your self). 2) if you not the adventurous type then just take your car to the dealer and have them check it out.
I got one of those before...see my photo for proof...GL.

Quote:
A leak can cause coolant to drop, water pump not working can also cause coolant to drop. Your coolant system is also desinged to release build-up steam. If you take water and you boil water and let it boil, sooner or later, the water will dissipate (spelling) and run dry I know coolant is not water but it is still a form of fluid which under goes extream high temperature.
