BMW Blinker System

Notice* did a search and didn't find anything.

How do you guys like the new blinker system compared to when you first got your car? I am still waiting on my E92 but I absolutely cannot get used to it on my mom's 5 and my girlfriend's 325i. I hate them! Does it get better with time?

The turn signals are great. You'll grow to dislike the "normal" blinkers on the other cars you buy.

Also, they are programmable. So you can simply disable the special features of the turn signal if you don't agree.

wait, are you saying you can make it so the "handle" goes up or down and stays in that position like a normal blinker system?

The blinker system is kind of like a notice to all other BMW drivers that this is your first one and it's new (which mine will be as well). When you see someone attempting to cancel the turn signal, the opposite signal will flash momentarily!

yea i was just confused too, he means that when u wanna make a turn u flick the turn stalk down or up but it bounces back in the original position without waiting till you actually make the turn, in other cars when you flick it up or down the stalk locks there until u finish making the turn then it returns back to original position unless you flick it back to normal position by yourself.

all you have to do to cancel the signal is to tap it again in the same direction not the opposite. It cancels the signal right away.

Easy way to understand is just move lever in the direction you will be turning and in that same direction to cancel.

From the manual:

Using turn signals
Press the lever beyond the resistance point.
To turn off manually, press the lever to the
resistance point.
Unusually rapid flashing of the indicator
lamp indicates that a turn signal indicator
has failed.<
Indicating a turn briefly
Press the lever as far as the resistance point for
as long as you wish to indicate a turn.

Triple turn signal activation
Press the lever as far as the resistance point.
The turn signals flash three times.
You can activate or deactivate this function.
For operating principle refer to page 58.
1. Lightly push button 1 in the turn indicator
stalk up or down repeatedly until the symbol
appears in the display accompanied by the
word "SET".
2. Press button 2.
3. Lightly push button 1 in the turn indicator
stalk down repeatedly until the symbol
appears in the display.
4. Press button 2.
5. Use button 1 to select:
>
Brief indication of a turn.
>
Triple turn signal.
6. Press button 2.
The setting is stored.

Old BMW blinkers (turn signals for people who aren't old/British) and most cars you press the lever down/up and it stays there, then pops back to the middle position when the signal goes off. On our cars you click the signal up and it immediately comes back to the middle position. Ours is like a mouse click, old ones are like flicking a switch. Plus we can do 3 blinks by just pushing a little.

I read a BMW review where the writer said the only think he didn't get about the car was the turn signals. Obviously not a BMW owner. I can't get used to the regular/old style now. I love the 3 blinks, and cant get used to holding the stalk down to change lanes in a regular car.

Damn you! I knew there was a reason for this design... That's exactly how I feel bombing down the interstate canceling and canceling my signals over and over...

Love it, but they could have made the noise quieter; I think it's louder than on my old E46. When I'm on the phone, people frequently ask what the noise is. The noise is, I think, artificial. It's a leftover from when the turn signal--er, I mean blinker, was controlled by some kind of electrical switch that actually clicked as it went on/off. People got used to it. Now turn signals are electronic in a different way and the noise isn't really there. In Lexus, it's almost silent to the point that you don't know if it's even on.
BTW, Cayenne has the same 3 blink feature with a light tap on the stalk.

The new X5 shifter is probably the same thing-an electronic switch that resembles what used to really be a mechanical link.
