comfort access--that smart?

I was under the impression that when I open the door without the fob, on the driver's side, the pass. side remains locked. So I always have to press the dash button for my g/f.

While washing the car, water around the door handles kept locking/unlocking the car, on BOTH sides.

So when I tried to open the pass side just by grabbing the handle, it unlocked, so I thought...WTF?

Yesterday, when I was on the driver side, I told my g/f to just pull the handle as it would unlock for her. No dice! But when I walked over to the pass side, fob in pocket, it unlocked.

Does this mean the car can differentiate if the fob is being carried on the driver or pass side? If so, that's smart! And that means you can still be a gentleman and unlock the pass side for a lady, yet if you're by yourself on and approaching on the driver side, nobody would be able to just grab the handle and jump-in on the pass side......

You must have the fob on your possesion to unlock the car. You can either program it to open just the drivers side when you touch the handle or to unlock all doors, your choice. I wouldnt live without it now that I have it.

Yes, it is that smart.

You can also set the car to open all locks when you touch either door handle using Idrive or the options menu accessed through the turn signal toggle switch.

Yes

Each front door and the trunk has a sensor to tell where you are standing

In the 5 Series it even knows if you are at a back door

On top of the other responses, I just wanted to clarify the part I put in bold: this isn't the case. If you have it set up to unlock all doors, it will do just that even if you're alone and open from the driver's side. So it's an either or setting.

Also, if it ever fails to open for you when you have a passenger, ask your passenger if they have their hand on the door handle (eager passengers!) I guess the system is trying to verify where the fob is and with you and your passenger's hands on the doors it gets stuck.

Thx...I'll double-check it. I am almost certain that when I unlock from the drivers, only the driver's is unlocked. The passenger is still locked.

I am sure that I can unlock the passenger-side from the passenger-side when I have the fob. Doing this also unlocks the driver's side. I guess we could go on and on...that means you let your g/f in, and another person could jump-in the driver's side....now, could they drive away with the fob in your pocket, and you being on the passenger side?

Let's say someone does jump in the driver's side, and you're not in the car and the fob is still in your pocket - they won't be going anywhere. The car won't start w/o the fob being found in the car (in fact you should notice that if you tried the start button then stepped out, the display will show a key symbol with a slash in it indicating that the key fob isn't in the car). OTOH let's say you did start the car, stepped out, then someone snuck in and drove off... well if you still have the fob in your pocket, I believe someone posted saying the car will shutdown on them after 18 miles w/o the fob (and at that point you'd probably file a police report and give the report # to BMW Assist who can then track down your car).

Very interesting stuff....I wondered about the motor running while the key had the slash through it......there is definitely "logic" programmed into this system, with "what if" scenarios.....

When I first got my car, carrying one key fob opened only the drivers door and carrying the other, all the locks opened. I reprogrammed that fob to only unlock the drivers door too.(fobs can be programmed differently) If i leave something in the car and go to the passenger door i know i get in having the fob on me, but i did not know the drivers door unlocked too, i will have to check that out.

I went to the carwash yesterday and took my cell and accidentally took the key too... by habit, i noticed it while paying. Good thing they left the car running, they drove it to the drying area with no key inside.

it also knows if the keys are inside the car or not, so if you leave a set in the car and lock it with the other set from the outside, some random dude cant come open and steal your car

so how about this....
If I am in my car with the fob in my pocket and pull up to 7-11. I leave the engine running and hop out then lock the door to go inside and grab something.
1) will the car keep running?
2) will the door even lock with the fob outside and the engine running?
3) can I just walk back out and grab the handle to open it then drive away?

Thanks

Oooooooh, yeah!
I like that! I can also run out and start the car to warm up for five minutes and not have to leave the key in it. Much safer!

Easy to dart into Starbucks for a nice hot coffee. I like it!

Thanks for the info. Music to my ears!

Ok guys check it out. I'm sorry if someone already pointed this out, just trying to help.

1. If you are in your car and it is locked and someone tries to run up and open the door passenger or driver, it will not open because the car knows that the key is inside.

2. you can start your car to warm it up and step out with your key and lock the car. Your car will remain running with no key and the doors will stay locked. Great if youre running into a store in the morning.

3. when you are washing your car you can leave the key inside the car, so that way the car wont lock and unlock everytime you touch the handle. As long as the key is inside the car will not let you lock it from outside.

4. with your doors locked, put your key in the trunk and close it. The trunk will immediatly open thus not allowing you to lock the keys in it.

5. I dont think its possible to lock your keys in the car with CA

6. did I miss anything???

Hope I was helpful.:rocks:
