Yep my 330 does the same thing, but it usaully goes away it's probably from lots of short runs and with only 600 miles on ya speedo, it's still breaking in, should go away the engine is still new and like any thing parts gotta gel, It will be okay but if it's making ya nervous take it in....but it's a waste....this is my second 3 series.....The Jedi

Mine does not tick and never ticked from the day I took delivery. Did you speak to the service advisor or your salesperson?

If you are concerned, take it in and let them listen to it. Then check out a demo car and see whether there is a difference. I do not believe it should tick.

Let us know what you discover, if anything.

I've read that a slight ticking sound is going to be normal from cars that have direct injection.

well if you have manual there is a fuel cut off around 7200-7300rpm's so your right but you never know!

---Ok this is off topic but when i shift my 325 at exactly 7000 i feel the fuel cutoff just about starting to act. Or just me losing HP since HP peak is around 6200 i believe? which one is it?

We bought my wife a 2006 325 i the motor makes a ticking sound to me it sounds like a lifter. went to the dealer and the told me its normal and that all the 3 series cars do it. went back for a second visit this time they told me it is a lifter but theirs nothing to worry about. Bull crap there is a design flaw in the motor maybe the oil valleys..

The sound is completely normal.. It is the lifters in the engine that is making the sound. I've had the same exact sound in my e46 330ci and still have it in my e90.

I warm mine up for 5-10 min in the morning...ticks the whole time. I then drive to work 48 miles, and when I arrive...no tick. I understand the difference between a cold engine and a warm one, but I think there is more going on than that.

So, if this "tick" is normal, why does it come and go?

funny burrito, my dealership said that my valve lifters were ticking as well. However, they and BMW said that it was not normal, and replaced all 24 of the lifters...

Ticking 330

Mine ticked very noisily for 2 months (2000-4000 miles) and I booked it in for attention at my dealer but having taken a few long trips it stopped doing it! Just like when you book into the doctors and get better the day before the appointment!!!! It hasn't re-occured but I will keep an eye on it for the next few thousand miles!

I also have had the tic tic on my new 325i since about the 5000 km mark. It was normally happening on a cold start, during damp weather...but it certainly wasn't predictable. It was usually gone by the time I got to work in the morning.

Anyways, I made an appointment and took it to the dealer. They gave me a loaner 2005 330 for a few days, but could not reproduce the sound. They said they changed the oil, and to call them when if the sound returned.

Well, return it did, louder than ever. I took a video of it for the technician, and e-mailed it to the dealership. Those in the know said it sounded like lifters. I returned the car to the dealership on the 8th of December and they have had it ever since.

After 5 days, they advised me that they were able to reproduce the sound. On Friday the 15th, the service advisor e-mailed me to say 4 new lifters had been ordered, and that Wednesday the 20th would be the earliest I could pick up the car.

Then, the following e-mail arrived yesterday:

Found a more serious problem. Not too sure what, placed a call to BMW, waiting to hear back. I'll investigate and as I said get back to you tomorrow. I am afraid the original Wed pickup date I mentioned is not going to happen, sorry to get your hopes up. Talk to you tomorrow

So tomorrow being today, I called the dealership. They have ordered a new CAM SHAFT!

Can you believe that? I've never heard of any car needing a new cam shaft after 10000 kms.

ETA, worst case, 30 days

yippee... not

bad lifters left long enough can result in a bad camshaft.

have you seen this thread? It's got tons of info on the issue.
