Is my SA trying to rip me off?
I bought a BMW Certified Pre-Owned 328i approx 3 weeks/2000 miles ago; this morning I took it in for an oil change as the service light indicated I needed 1. Shortly after dropping off my car the SA called to inform me I also needed a radiator flush and power steering fluid change. This car has less than 30,000 miles on it, is he serious? Shouldn't all this be done before a car is sold as a CPO? If none of this was done, should the dealer now do it for free, or do I have to take it back to the dealer that I bought the car from (further away from home) for them to do it. I'm thinking there is nothing wrong with the radiator fluid or the power steering fluid and the technician/ service adviser/ dealer is trying to make a quick buck!!

Do it yourself and you don't have to worry about it. Better then taking a dealers word for it. who knows if they even do the service, or they just charge you for it. I hate dealers.

BMW has no schedule interval for Radiator Coolant or Power Steering fluid for E9X. Any flushes/replenishment performed will be on your nickel.

I see no reason why your car would need a radiator flush and power steering flush (especially at 30k), BMW has no service intervals for these and are considered lifetime (100k). They are not covered or done under the free maintenance program and if your car needed them changed for special circumstances it would have been done during the CPO process.
I would simply decline, and call a service advisor at the dealer you purchased the car from and inform them. |

Ask him why he is recommending it if its not on the Schedule. Be nice and see what he says. You did not specify what year the car is. Some fluids are done on time intervals.
Don't get mad, just stay informed. |

Oh, I forgot... apparently the fuel injectors needs cleaning also. How would you know this? Since asking him to put all this in writing so I can return to the dealer where I purchased the car and ask that they complete the necessary repairs, I have not heard back from him.

None of what your SA has told you needs to be done unless you are experiencing problems.
If you plan on keeping this car past 100k/until you run it to the ground, I would do the fluid changes for preventative maintenance. Once I'm done with classes in a couple weeks, I'm flushing all my fluids. Coolant, power steering, trans, and diffs (and convertible top hydraulic fluid) are all "lifetime" fluids." Engine oil (and filter) and brake fluid are changed at intervals. I think I got them all. AC needs to be recharged but that's usually only done when you feel that the AC isn't working as well as it should. I'm at 64k. I also plan on swapping the oil filter housing gasket and the mechatronics sealing sleeve as those are common failures on my car. |

You say the car has less than 30k miles and it's a 2008. I'm guessing the car is still under the factory warranty, which also includes free maintenance. Like the others have said, those items aren't maintenance items that are due. Any maintenance that is due should be free right now. Sounds like the dealer is just trying to make some extra money.

It totally sounds like a scam, but seriously, don't BMW dealerships just go by what's read from the key? Or do they really do a 180 once the vehicle is out of free maintenance?

After telling the SA to put all this extra work he wants to charge me for in writing, he said he would double check what all is required and call me back. Next call I got was message saying my car is ready for pickup... no more mention of extra work, HA!

That being said, the "Old School Maintenance Guide" suggests a 2-yr interval on coolant flushes and a 30k mile interval on power steering fluid flushes. Mike Miller @ Roundel can send you the latest document with guidelines/part numbers/etc. for all Bimmers if you're curious.

To BMW, a lifetime fluid is anything that won't fail in the first 100,000.00 miles. If you want to keep your car a long time, waiting for 100k or waiting on a failure can be expensive.
