The 700 mi tank of diesel...albeit briefly.
Well, it was for about 90 miles worth of tailwind supported highway driving between LA and Las Vegas earlier this week. I managed almost 43mpg for a 100 miles of flat stretch. It dropped off once I hit the hills...but ended with a 38mpg tank overall, averaging almost 80 mph, which is fantastic in my mind.
My car just turned 10K miles and I'm seeing the city mileage creep up a few mpgs, which is nice. Diesel was a good 35 cents cheaper a gallon in NV than in CA, but we should all be seeing a bit of relief over the next few weeks, thankfully. The 335d goes from strength to strength. It is silent at 80mph, gets thumbs up from truck drivers who see the "d" and is just the perfect cruiser. At one point, some jacka$$ in an Audi S5 tailgated me as I passed a truck, cruise set at 77, and I was passing at a decent speed. He wanted to race, so I gave it a big 10-15 second foot to floor from about 65mph. I kept up with him just until the last few secs where I backed off after realizing it was a 20-something driving like a total idiot and I didn't want to encourage anything. I went back to my 77mph cruise control controlled speed. I laughed as he blew by me....and a few miles later I saw him pulled over for speeding. I'm ready to start the letter writing campaign to BMW USA to bring the 535d Touring here. That is the perfect car in my mind..and even more perfect if it has X-Drive. |

Love the Diesel. I've gone 600 on a tank and that included a long traffic Jam on I-10 which killed my consumption. Ended up 40.85mpg (Dothan Alabama to Beaumont Texas unrefueled). I definitely think it is possible to get mid 600's maybe even 700 out of a 335d, traffic and terrain permitting.

So at what mileage is my D suppose to get better MPG's? I'm getting close to 500 miles on a tank and have 6700 miles.

535D is just so unbelievably sweet!
Here in Taiwan they sell both the 535i and 535d....and on that car, I really can't see why anyone would take the i. On the 3 series, I think it's a little different because the car weighs less and some drivers love the revs of the i...but on the 5, all the torque is perfect for it. Not to mention the 8 gears....a remarkable car for those in the US who do long highway cruises. |

I just returned my 2010 335d that I was loaned while my car was on for service under warranty. I had it for 20 days because we had all that bad weather come through down here in the south.
I have to admit for a diesel I was VERY impressed. Its very quiet, especially at hwy speeds. The only real reminder is at initial cold start.. ahh, diesel. As far as running an S5, meh, I'm not going to get into that but he power band was nice, different from my 335, but it didn't feel out of breath anywhere. Very torquey at lower rpm's but not bad up top either. Its by no means a racing car or as sporty as a TT petrol 335, but then again my car doesn't spit out 30-35mpg on the hwy. My biggest complaint, which is completely not BMW's fault, would be the FILTHY diesel pumps at all the gas stations I filled the car up at. Every time I filled the pumps were covered with sticky diesel/dirt/grime etc.. I mean filthy.

No Audi hating here on my part! It was the dumb a$$ driver. I like all Audis....especially the A4 Avant. I also love seeing the Q7 TDI with the clean diesel sticker on it.
My city mileage in LA is 21-23mpg. That's with an average speed of about 17mph. The joys of traffic and constant traffic light stops and starts means it's tough to even meet EPA city mileage figures. Granted, i got 12-13mpg in my 335i convertible. |

My brother's coworker just got a brand-new Q7 diesel. Stereo stopped working in the 2nd week--go figure, German car I guess? My coworker got the 7-spd S4, seems nice. This is a lease society where everyone gets a new car in 27 to 36 mos, so there really is no typical BMW nor Audi driver imho....to illustrate, people even lease hybrids and diesels, two scenarios which are supposed to payback over a very long run.

If an F10 diesel was available here today I'd almost *certainly* be driving one.If one had been officially announced I'd almost *certainly* be waiting for one.But BMW snoozed and they lost...me,at least. |

mileage on ours is about 22-24 mpg, mostly punching around town and some freeway jaunts. Not bad considering that's close to what we get with our 4-banger Acura TSX...
