Money shift! That is true what they told you.

Better call your insurance company if you really do need a new engine. Was there actual damage to the engine or did you just wreck the transmission?

theres no way they will cover it. your overrev is stored in the ECU. find used engine in junkyard/ebay. goto indy shop for install.

You can ask your insurance but they probably won't cover it

Not to sound rude but it comes down to driver error or negligence. The vehicle cannot prevent overrev issues when it's mechanically forced to do so; if you had revved up to redline it would limit you and cut off fuel, but you physically forced the engine to go that fast, at which point timing is off and you fuck up valves and pistons etc.

I wouldn't imagine you need an entirely new engine, but i'm sure you've got major problems. Valves, head, piston, etc.. but it's not like every component of the engine just stops working because of an over rev.

Your not being rude, just honest, and i appreciate it, and i cant blame anyone but myself for the overrev. i wouldnt feel as bad if i were racing or something, but it was just a mistake, but hey what can you do

Ahhh... The money shift.

That sucks. If it makes you feel better, there are money shift stories littered all over BMW forums (as well as other manufacturers I'd assume) for years back.....

That sucks man. There's not much you can do besides fix it, but a money shift will for sure have wrecked the shit out of the inside of your engine. There's no easy way around it. Best of luck though, let us know how it turns out.

It might be worth trying to give your insurance a call. I blew up my motor in my Jetta and they actually covered me buying a used motor as well as the labor to install. I could install on my own, so I bought a new crate motor with upgraded internals and it ran better than it ever had.

It's always worth a call to see what they may be able to do for you.

Just curious
how did it go down?
Did you downshift and then BAM!
Was there a noise? smoke ? engine lights ? immediate need for new underwear?
Does it turn over really fast now?
Take it to an Indy and have them perform a cylinder leakdown test
Did you look in your oil fill cap for shrapnel?

Man that sucks. I don't quite understand how you went that far in the gearing. You must have forced it into second. Your insurance will probably cover the engine if it is stock. I blew an engine while spraying on a Chevy truck and my insurance company replaced the engine (I made sure to remove the nitrous and everything off of it before they saw it).
