Please Educate Me

I have a 08 e90 328i.

My free maintenance warranty will expire on May, 2012.

Should I get the CPO warranty or the extend maintenance contract?

What are the pros and cons?

Can I negotiate the prices with a BMW SA?

I am really appreciated if you can take your time and share your opinions and experiences.

Is 1994 your DOB? For me by 2012 I would be looking at the new body style 3 series. I guess it depends on your age, by which I mean if you could afford a new car by then would you upgrade? Or if your going to keep this car for a while, invest in the CPO warranty. Really personal preference.

If you are planning to keep the car, consider getting the CPO warranty, I would say that a must, it will even help with the resale value in the future too, as far as price goes, I don't know if dealer is willing to negotiate (nor do they have much room to anyway), however, would not hurt to try, if you can talk them down even $50, thats $50 more in your pocket at least. Maintenance contract will be less important, some of the works, if not all can be DIY or take it elsewhere, or even take it back to the dealer, just need to calculate how much you drive, if you drive "enough", then you will get more services done in the time frame, my E90 is not my daily drive, so in my case, maintenance contract makes no sense to me, I am going to pay a lot less out of pocket even if I take my car back to dealer for services.

is the CPO warranty something that anyone can just go in and buy?

As far as the maintenance contract - not worth it imho. I was in teh same boat (except my car was already CPO) and I calculated out what all the maintenance warranty would cover and i didnt see it as something that was worth $2000. If they covered tires? yes. but all you'll prob get out of it is a couple oil changes, maybe 2 brake jobs, and your filters... All which can be purchased and done for well under $2K!

To get the CPO warranty you would have to make sure the car is within full specs on the BMW CPO requirements (including runflats), and then pay your dealer to stamp it CPO.. Which will prolly run $1800 or so.

You can also just buy an extended warranty which will cover more than the CPO warranty.
