I owned an E93. One thing that was both scary and cool is how complex the roof is. It wouldn't take much body tweaking to make the roof inoperable. And I can't imagine how much it would cost to fix it once the car is damaged.
Why in the world would you want to open the top if the car is damaged? You might never be able to get it closed again. There are clearly belt-driven mechanisms in the roof. I don't see how you'd be able to 'force' it short of disassembling the entire roof. I wouldn't touch the roof until the body damage is dealt with. |

there are 32 sensors in the roof alone, something like 70 overall for the mechanism. Any manual intervention would damage the sensors. The roof + Sensors are near $3500 - $4000. Then there is no easy manual way of doing it, bmw engineers know the tricks so they should deal with it.

That was my first thought as well. Go to a body shop that is familiar with E93s.

hey
not sure how accurate this is since i dont own a e93 but ppl have had success by removing the plug form two modules that run the smarttop. Removing the plugs resets the top and some have had success with this method. THis link has a comfort access installation procedure but some have used it for gaining access to at least one of the modules for resetting purposes.
http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...story+smarttop if that doesnt work, then u might have a failed sensor which is also somewhat common but costs $500-$1000/sensor and labor from stealership. goodluck, hope this helps |

There is no manual way to open/close the retractable hardtop. And FYI, the replacement cost of the entire roof (should the whole thing need to be replaced) is just under $17,000--and that's *before* labor!

It would be difficult for anyone, regardless of how deep their pockets are, owning a high mileage E93 and spending $17,000+ to have the fancy top working again.

To echo prior posts, why do want the top down given that you may not be able to get it back up?
If you are asking can I continue to operate the top without having it fixed that's a big stretch. I think you need to either have it fixed by a BMW dealer or accept the fact that your vert is now a coupe. PS: To address another prior post the top doesn't have any belts, it is all operated with hydraulics driven by electric motors. |

Any ideas about the "special tool 54 0 163 together with special tool 13 5 250"? Do you have pictures of these tools? Or any other ideas to close the top without those? Thanks! |
