RS4 v 335i

Don't normally do this sot of thing but the sun was shining this morning, windows open, clear dual carriageway dah de dah.....

The Black RS4 saloon (who had been glancing back for a good while) nailed it off the roundabout onto the A34 at Trentham heading south, a crescendo of booming V8 and two brief puffs of smoke....

I followed suit, and struggled with slip & wheelspin in second at first, but short shifted into 3rd and reeled him in, into 4th and was having to back off and on to keep a distance from him.

Well into 4th he backed off and pulled left, a little suprised I think?

with a jb3, dps etc you would probably of had him had you been on a fair start. I dont think a standard 335 would be a match for an rs4 though

where the roads wet?

No dry, maybe a bit of morning dew still around though.

A standard 335i = no chance of course, the RS4 is a GREAT car straight from the showroom - I'd love one.

But it's nice to get a gauge of just how quick a 335i can be.

A lot of RS4s put out less power than standard and it well documented issue over the internet. Infact, I was reading a magazine in GSF the other day and they had an article in about the exact problem. The car in there pulled 311bhp at the wheels with the issue and once they cleaned up some manifold flaps and I think some carbon deposits it was 350bhp at the wheels. My JB4'd 335i was 355bhp at the wheels so thats better than a healthy RS4. And then of course then there's the torque advantage

Saying that though I still would have one in a heartbeat for the V8 soundtrack

There were more than a few puffs of smoke at gear changes from this RS4..

This guy obviously loved the noise, he had all four windows half way down the whole time!!

I think with these back to back public road shoot outs, it about the size of your Nads as much as anything.

It's easy to get carried away, I think a 15 to 20 second blast on an empty dual carriageway is OK, and top of fourth gear is more than a good place to back off - if he hadn't have done I would have anyway within a second or so.

It's much easier to follow too, keep your distance is basically all you have to do.

Whereas the leader has whole lot more to watch out for....

My mate has an RS4 convertible with a custom exhaust...... just imagine how that sounds with the roof down through a tunnel!

It's defo the quickest car I've been in - feels quicker than an M3 IMO.

I found myself behind an Audi TT RS last week on a quiet stretch of country road. The road has a couple of long clear open sections, at each one the TT clearly floored it. I don't normally engage but thought this was an interesting match. Surprisingly, even with his first-mover advantage, I was able to haul in the gap and basically maintain a fixed distance through the acceleration (not wishing to be an overt dick I held well back, a good 100+ yards as it's not cool to harass or crowd another driver) but was well able to say glued at that distance. I suspect it gave him pause!

same thing happened to me a few weeks back, TTRS tried to undertake me and could not pull at all on me through 3rd and 4th gear ( I'm stock also ).

then traffic came and I shifted to the middle lane and slowed, he carried on and continued to weave in and out of traffic without indicating; like a penis.

I'm struggling to find another car to replace the 335i .. not much in the price range that can out perform it. Which is a good thing I spose.

plus one...

especially when you can pick up a 2nd hand 335i at £14k from a bmw dealership nowadays....

at £14k....not many cars will give you 306bhp, look nice and handle well (ish)....

top it up with an extra £6k on mods.....

and you have a car that will make porkys and M3s sweat....

Watch out for the Talivans who like to sit on the slip road beside the little roundabout at the end of that stretch - I've been lucky but I know a lot of people who've been caught there without even spotting the van...

It's good for a blast the other way, too - from the monkey forest back towards the gardens

I love the RS4 and RS6, great cars and cracking engines!

I had a tuned rs6 avant (530bhp) back to back with the 335i and can confirm the 335i with mods is quicker once rolling. In the wet the rs6 would trounce it to 60mph though through the sheer grip it had.

I ran the 1/4 mile with both and they went as follows

RS6 with 1/2 tank of vpower fuel, dry track, NO fancy launches as the rs6 box is like chocolate!
12.7 @ 111mph

335i with full tank of 95 (doh!!) and 235 winter tyres
12.7 @115mph

So the 335i is quicker, not by a huge amount but def quicker. Its a good comparison as its the same driver on the same track in similar conditions

With some modifications - no bigger turbos - a 335i is faster than an RS4 and also an RS5.

Last week on the Nürburgring though...there was that crazy Swedish RS4 (the old one with a biturbo 6) with around 600hp...GIAC software of course!

Have had a few RS4's on the RR in work and they never make the claimed power, always a good 25-30bhp less than standard, shocking really but quite funny when you see a 'dude' in one thinking he's the man!

Really would like a go in a 335i, I know what the power will feel like but would just like to see how it delivers it, and if it pulls like a train all the way to the red line or not?

his 4wd system would also lose him a good 10-15bhp from fly figures more compared to the bimma's RWD tranny setup I reckon, still would have thought the bm would be a good 75bhp ish less? possibly more torque than the RS4 though, and that's if he was on V power...
