List of Scheduled Maintenance Items
The following was taken from my local NTB. Its a good guide as folks are always asking about what to do, on the boards. Don't expect a lot of this stuff to be done by the stealership, during the warranty period, so you'd better get on it after that period:
1. Oil and Lube & Filter: Every 3 months/3k miles (Depending on the type of engine oil used, you can obviously go for more miles) 2. Wheel Alignment: Every 6 months/6k miles 3. Tire rotation and balance: Every 6months/6K miles 4. Fuel Induction system Cleaning 1 year/15K miles 5. Battery Test 1 year/15k miles 6. 4x4 Transfer case fluid exchange 1 year/15K miles 7. Repack or service wheel bearings 2 years/24K miles 8. Replace Cabin air filter 2 years/24K miles 9. Cooling system coolant flush 2 years/30K miles 10. Transmission Fluid Flush 2 years/30K miles 11. Differential fluid change 2 years/30K miles 12. Manual Transmission fluid change 2 years/30K miles 13. Brake system fluid exchange 2 years/30K miles 14. Replace air filter 2 years/30K miles 15. Replace fuel filter 2 years/30K miles 16. Power steering fluid change 30K miles 17. Replace oxygen sensor 4 years/40K miles 18. Shocks/struts 4 years/50K miles 19. Replace drive belts and coolant hoses 5 years/60K miles 20. Replace timing belt 60-90K miles 21. Air conditioning performance check annually 22. CV boots inspection annually Doing these can be pricey, so plan accordingly. Also consider shopping for fluids online, as well as using a local shop with good rates. Dealerships will advise against most of these except oil changes, which can have dire consequences for your vehicle. If you do get them to do these, their labor rates, and parts/fluids cost will be outrageous. |

This is pretty standard for any car but
A BMW doesn't have a timing belt it has a timing chain at least the newer ones
do(for the last 10 years at least) . You are not suppose to have to change it for the lifetime of the motor. The other stuff that is lifetime is based on the fact BMW won't warranty anything passed 100k which is what they consider lifetime I guess. I think all wheel bearings are sealed now no repacking. Some of this info is dated by quite a bit. You might find this usefull http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e60...e-our-m5s.html Also oil tests done by members of this board at Blackstone say the oil is good for 10k but not the 15 to 18k BMW is suggesting. A lot of people that care are going with 7500 or 5000 if there compulsive. Last edited by ctuna; 04-22-2011 at 11:42 PM.. |

So, basically, let NTB handle the items on the list. They make money on each one. So.... yeah. Grain of salt required. Wheel alignment every 6k miles? Really? Replace your shocks and struts every 4 years??

Absolutely transmission fluid lasts for the life of the transmission. Which will be significantly shortened if you never change it. But hey, you get new fluid with that $$$$ new transmission!

Of course NTB will put out an irrelevant list. Irrelevant work is their bread and butter. My mom gets postcards reminding her that her 2005 Honda is due for its 77,250 mile service. I got the same silly postcards up until about 180k with my Nissan, all these odd a** numbers, like 173,750. F them. The only thing it ever had were 2 sets of platinum plugs, brake fluid 6X, coolant 3X, 2 fuel filters, clutch fluid once when slave replaced, in addition to oil, brakes, cv joints. That's it in 13 years on the road and 204k. Of course a shop is going to recommend unneeded "check this" and "replace that." What's in the owner's manual is all that's needed, nothing more.

In spite of Turkeybaster's fears, BMW still warrants our cars to 50,000 miles (100k with CPO) so I guess they have not had to replace too many failed parts due to their recommended service intervals.
BTW, since I'm heading to NTB to change the Transfer Case fluid & inspect the CV joints, where exactly are those things on my RWD BMW's? Nevermind, I'm sure NTB will find them and charge me accordingly - if not I can always go to Jiffy-Lube for my 3k oil change and all the other important stuff! Also, this same thread was posted to the Maintenance forum. Wasn't once enough? Tom |

+1 on my e46 I got it aligned when I purchased new tires at 80,000 miles! (Alignment was free)

If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger
