Help me buy my first BMW

I'm interested in getting either a 135i or 335i coupe. I'm leaning towards the the 335i for the bigger back seat. (Not so much for people but for the occasional car seat anyone with experience with either car please let me know how it is. I wouldn't mind the 135i if its doable.). I'm not sure if I'm going new or CPO. Since I can build a new one online I'll start there. I want a fairly simple one with the following options. I'm not to interested in BMW Assist but I believe you need that for handsfree calling, is this correct?

Base MSRP - $44,100
M Sport Package - $2,800
Comfort Access keyless entry - $500
iPod and USB adapter - $400
Satellite radio with 1 year subscription - $350
BMW Assist with Bluetooth - $750
Destination & Handling: - $875
Total MSRP as Built - $49,775

I have never bought a BWM, or for that matter any luxury car before. How much play do they have in there price? What could I think to reasonably get this for before tax and tags?

Also consider the looks of the car. IMO the 335i is the much better looking vehicle. Go see both in person and TEST DRIVE. Pics don't do the 1 justice.

Going with the manual transmission? If you're not, the 135i is offered with the 7spd DCT which is not available on the 335i . . . that's a big decision point.

M sport is an absolute must-have IMO, makes the car look more aggressive and you get the awesome M wheel and short-throw shifter.

You need the Bluetooth for hands-free calling, correct.

Don't forget +$550 for metallic paint if you want something special.

Also if you like listening to music while driving the h/k system is wonderful. The 2011s are supposed to have a better stock system than last year's model, which had an AWFUL stereo. How much better I don't know . . .

If it's a custom order there's not a whole lot of play in the MSRP in my experience, best off at this point waiting to see if there is a spring lease program of some sort.

Stealth,

There is a lot of negotiating room against msrp even when you custom order. I just ordered my second BMW and now know a fair amount about how it all works. Once you decide on what you want, pm me and I can tell you what a good deal would be. It will range between 2k to 4k off msrp depending on the model.

I actually just got my 2010 328i coupe yesterday, I got it over the one series for two reasons it has a waaaaay more comfortable ride and the interior space is considerably bigger. If you get a 3 series coupe defiantly go CPO there are some great deals, the one series on te other hand is really hard to find a good cpo car. Good luck and go test drive both cars.

Thanks for the all of the great information. Yes definitely needs bluetooth hands free calling, so I have to get BMW Assist correct? I can't believe that doesn't come standard nowadays. I currently drive a 2 seater and manual, so any back seat is a big improvement. In fact I was set on the 135 due to the lower price and DCT but the wife wants to be sure that one day a car seat can be put in the car without to much struggle and it looked real tight in there. I'm on the fence about transmission. I'd love a good manual but my long day to day drive seems to have more traffic every day. Thats why liked the DCT in the 135, seemed like the best of both worlds. I'd probably buy a 135 new and go CPO for a 335. Lease will likely not work since i drive about 80 miles a day. Did the CPO 08 335's have most of the same options as the current ones?

This is my first BMW to...

I will say this IF YOU GO CPO ROUTE...take your time and look for one if you decide to go that route. I found my 07 with 29k (still under factory warranty until september of this year) and had every package except the m-tech. And I only paid $26k for mine. But it took me about 3 months to find EXACTLY what I wanted, color combo and all.

I came from a Land Rover LR3 with premium audio which includes like 10 speakers, sub and an amp.

My 2011 328xi does not have the premium audio package and I am quite happy with the sound quality. Not as good as the Rover's but pretty close, the BMW's ride is a little noisier so that is pretty much the difference. Satellite could be a little better, but with the iPod hooked up, the sound is really nice.

I listen to everything, hip-hop, rock, alternative, country, classical, pop....

CPO is just a certification of a used vehicle, so options will vary from car to car. You can get some pretty good deals on CPO cars and BMW offers incentives to buy CPO's as well. The warranty isnt anywhere near as good as the factory warranty, but the drivetrain is covered which is the important part.

Its always nice to buy a brand new car, but sometimes you can find a steal in the used market.

i will never buy new cars because cpo warranty is longer and is same as new cars.

this is my 3rd cpo purchase and never had issues any more than a new car.

Beware of private dealers, they might offer great price, but you have to get them THOROUGHLY checked out before you buy it. It is possible to find perfectly fine cars from private dealers, but if you play the chances and get a crappy car... god bless you =D

Buy cpo

If this is your first BMW, buy cpo and make sure you buy the additional warranty. There are plenty of 08 335i's coming back off leases. Navi and iPod connectors are a must. Cold weather and premium packages are a must too. These options should not be too hard to get on a car coming on off a lease. The interest rate for cop is .9%. hard to beat that incentive. Make sure you stick to common colors like silver or black so you get a high resale (trade in) in 4 - 5 years when you go to get your 5 series!

Huh? It's BETTER than the factory warranty. You get the factory warranty extended to 100k miles.

Are you implying an extremely tall four year old wont fit in a 1 series?
