Oh god, tell me it's not my turbos (added video)
When the car is cold and during acceleration I hear very pronounced whine from the engine bay that depends on engine load, not the RPM's. Sounds a lot like turbo whine, and believe me, I know how bad turbo sounds.
Thing is as soon as the car is warmed up I don't hear anything. Car boosts and drives just fine. The whine only happens when the car is cold. It's 07 335 with 63k miles and out of warranty Edit: Video here http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...3&postcount=29 Last edited by onebadmofo; 03-31-2011 at 04:08 PM.. |

I think turbo whine is normal when the engine is cold. Ever noticed how the engine itself sounds different when it's cold? Same concept with the turbos. Unless it actually sounds like something is wrong, I wouldn't be too alarmed.

sounds like its normal. unless you feel any deficiencies in acceleration it should be fine to hear a bit of a noise from turbo. afterall, its forced induction (very high one at that!) and you are bound to hear some air noise, just like your a/c will have noise at your home if you turn them on!
see how it feels rather than how it sounds... |

Mine does the same thing when cold, goes away when warm, this is somewhat normla to an extent. If you have a aftermarket tune, you should do some logs and send them to your tuner for evaluation to see if your holding boost etc.

Well no updates really. I tried to take a video last night but for some reason audio wasn't recorded. I'll try to dig around in the engine bay today after work and see if I can check the shaft play on turbos. For now I switched Procede to map 0 and avoid boosting when engine is cold.
I'm taking it for a check-up this Saturday. If BMW denies 'good will' then I'm gonna either trade the car for a Hyundai in or put some upgraded turbos. But with mileage like that not sure if the upgrade worth it, who knows what's gonna be next. Last edited by onebadmofo; 03-31-2011 at 08:49 AM.. |

It's comments like this that make me wish I had read boards like this before buying my car... I don't know when 63k miles became a "high mileage car", but generally I've only heard comments like this from cars that have 150k+ miles on them... |

If you lived in California the turbocharger is covered for 7 years / 70k miles by the California Emission Warranty Parts..
(Modification voids it of course)

Are you having major issues with YOUR car? Is your engine modified? If you visited car forums before buying ANY car, you would end up never buying anything. Message boards amplify the negatives.

Or will the stealership say you're outta luck and then end up having to file some sort of claim with the government/dmv to get the replacement covered under warranty....6-9 months later after the paperwork has been processed? |

I don't know why My car is at 55k and is still going like a champ... if something breaks I wouldn't hesitate to fix it except that more often than not... people here seem to think that 60k is the magic number where the car turns into a pile of scrap. |

Unicorn poop, which is used to hold BMWs together, fails after about 60k miles.
