Oil Change at Dealer...

So I was considering just buying the parts to do my own oil change and went into the dealer to get them. The total came to 58 plus tax. I asked how much they charge for an oil change, and it came to 81 plus tax... It just happened to be a Saturday, so for the 20-30 extra bucks, I told them to go for it. So my son and I sat in the lobby and ate a great buffet style lunch and watched some of the NCAA tournament.

So for the 20 bucks more I paid, I was able to get two free lunches and a car wash. Not to include the hassle of doing it myself....

Moral of the story... if you have the dealer to your changes, go on a Saturday when they are offering the free buffet lunch. Its every Saturday, at least at this dealer.

No buffet at mine either, but when they periodically run a $78 special for oil changes, why DIY? Plus they throw in a much better hand wash than I can do myself (with never a swirl).

Sounds like the OP got a great deal all around!

Moral of story, amenities provided at the dealerships varies.
Some even charge higher for oil change, SoCal charges from 80-100 depends where you go.
Buffets, no, only hot beverages, water fountain, and some pastries in the morning.

Yeah.....

You know- I'm 46 and the idea of crawling under the car, getting it up on an jackstands- or safely lifted- draining the oil...... etc.
I just don't dig that anymore. Too little time in my weeks, too much hassle.
I bought all the parts in the Fall to do the change- they are still sitting on the floor next to the car (car is stored for the winter).
I just have ZERO desire to do it.
Ordering the PE exhaust this week, when my guy puts that on, I'll have him do the change.

Bummer. The service center at my local dealer doesn't provide those kinds of amenities and they're closed on Saturdays.

I'm 42 and I hear ya on that - so I bought a lift.

Makes DIY soo much easier. Of course if I only had one car it wouldn't make sense, but I have 5 at the moment, 3 of which have no dealerships in the US. 1 has no dealerships anywhere. I enjoy the "car bonding" time of doing servicing myself, it's relaxing. A free lunch buffet might sway me though...

My local dealership wanted 82 for the parts and 155 for the change last time I asked them..... I'll pass and do it myself.

I think the 330 oil change is cheaper then 335 FYI

Probably could have went to wal-mart and bought a premium oil (like castrol) and filter for less then $35.

Current BMW I6 motors all take 7 quarts of full synthetic so there's no reason the turbo change would cost more - unless you are referring to an E46 M3 using super expensive 10w60 oil.

And if you can get a BMW approved oil & filter for $35, good luck. A complete oil change kit from a dealer on line runs about $60~65, my dealer charges about $100 ($78 with coupon) for parts & labor.

Back in the day, I always did my own oil changes. Over time, I ended up just reverting to the dealers to do it as free time seemed to be hard to find.

I started doing it again in the past few years because my Jeep GC CRD would cost $230 + to do it at the dealer. I bought a Jabsco Electric Oil Transfer pump and just suck the old oil up the dipstick, replace the spin on filter on the top of the engine, fill it up and I am done. It takes me less than 20 mins to do it and no mess. I do this on my V50 as well as it has a spin on filter in which you can replace with no mess.

The 335 has no dipstick, so this one goes to the dealer.

Yea 3 of the 4 BMW dealers in Chicago have a nice Saturday food scene, big screen and free computers/internet.

$80 at the dealer for a oil change? On a 3? Nice!

Yep... it came to 86$ after taxes... As far as the swirls... I dont think the touchless will put swirls in my car. Is it the best car wash, probably not, but in the winter months its not a bad wash...

Man some people sure like to hate, on this site... I was just giving a good justification as to why I chose to let the dealer do the oil change... Geez, some of you need to lighten up a little.

For 25 or so bucks, I got the labor on the oil change, two free lunches, and a car wash... I dont think that was such a bad deal!!!!

lol free buffet lunch? Somehow I don't think a BMW dealership would serve any good food that would make me want to sit there as opposed to taking a loaner....

You would get a loaner for an oil change?
