120i 4 door hatchback spotted!

I was driving the family to MSP this morning (in the Yukon XL) when my wife piped up and said, "What the heck is that!" In front of us was what looked like a 1er hatch. I passed it, and sure enough! It was a Silver-Grey 120i 4 door hatchback with what I assumed was out-of-country license plates. The plates were the same size and shape as ours, but the numerals were all different groupings.
I thought that the 120i was a European market only car? Must be wrong on that! It is the MSP car show week, but this was definitely a hard driven car, door dings and all.

Anyone have any information on this rare sighting?
