I don't work on cars for a living, but I still do a lot of work myself. I installed shocks and springs on my car, and recently swapped the intake manifold for a 3 stage 330i unit. Also did a few other things that aren't so dirty, like sports seats and the homelink mirror.

On my other cars, I've swapped motors, suspensions, done some rewiring, and built a motor for one while back.

I also work for a contractor, but I don't own the company :-P

I am not a professional,

But I sure do love getting my hands dirty wrenching. I think I will go work (without much pay) for AutocarSports (http://www.eurocardoc.com/) when I can retire - just to help rebuild Ferrari and Lamborghini stuff all the time.

I suppose new-comers make about $15 bucks an hour, guys that work long might be making $20-25, maybe a bit more for senior mechanics. < thats my guess on this. I am sure $60-65K is tops for anyone in the shop there.

I heard used car sales managers make over $100k at Herb Chambers BMW, also was told that if you are a good sales person, you can pull about $80K

most shops pay the techs on a flat rate system. its not uncommon to get paid 20hrs for a 10hr day. generally 30% of the door rate is the hourly rate.
btw most good techs are over 100k.

This is off topic, but I always see posts about a million dollar house... do people mean multi millions? Because a million dollars doesn't buy you much more then an average house unless prices are a lot different in the states, I've always been a bit curious about his.

my apartment in Asia is 710k and is roughly 600sq ft. Million dollars will probably not even get you a house.

I get my hands dirty too....on the keyboard

Location matters a lot. My modest 3500 SQ Ft house in NC, would be worth millions, if it were in So Cal or the S.F. Bay Area. My smaller house in CT sold for a much larger sum, than what I bought in NC. I watch the house shows, and Canada's pricing is high in comparison. Makes me wish I had not turned down the opportunity to buy land, with beach rights in P.E.I. about 7 years ago.

I really hope that's not true - that would be almost as bad as the unions' ridiculous wages in the US OEMs...

I just googled and came up with this:

Quote:
Master mechanics are the mechanics with extensive experience and years of dedication to the field. Master mechanics can earn well over $100,000 a year, sometimes up to $120,000 a year. However, these salary ranges aren't the normal averages and exist only with a small percentage of BMW mechanics. There is a tiered rating system for BMW mechanics. A C-tech is the lowest tier, but can earn up to $40,000 a year. A B-tech can earn anywhere from $50,000 to $70,000 a year. An A-tech, otherwise known as a master mechanic, can earn up to $120,000 a year. A trainee can expect to earn anywhere from $20,000 to $30,000 a year, until the completion of BMW STEP training and certification.
Looks like 50k to 80k is normal-ish?

by million i actually mean 1 million. and in Boston area (20-30 min away) i think it gets you pretty damn big and nice house (4 bedroom at least). i mean my friend who makes around 170-200k per year bought 600-650k home and thats alot. This contractor guy's house is in one of the most expensive neighborhoods in Boston, its fully renovated with all Italian shit and its big

I personally think that anything over 450-500k is alot and can get you in a nice home. Prices are low these days

Damn I need to move out of my area haha. 400-450k would put you in a below average home in my area these days, the prices are just way too inflated. 600-650k seems to be a decent home, my uncle just bought a 3500 sq ft house and it was 850k and its nothing special at all, just a normal house in a normal neighbourhood. People in this neck of the woods are just too crazy about buying homes and are willing to pay whatever it costs, prices have been inflating year after year after year for the past I dno HOW many years.
