How does the Procede do it?
I have the Procede v5, 2/7 maps.
Due to work I've had to make a few trips from Pittsburgh to Parsippany, NJ the past few weeks in my 09 335xi. The trip is approx 350 miles each way and prior to my v5 install I would average about 23 mpg (I would only calculate it once I hit the actual highway which made it about 322 miles). Yes, that seems low to many people on here but I'm XI and its also a pretty hilly trip for the first 150 miles and I cruise at about 78mph. Now after the Procede install, it's obvious the power is much better but I was extremely surprised that my mpg went up significantly. I'm aware that there are many other factors but here are the variables I could think of. 1.) Tire pressure was always within 32-35psi 2.) 93 Octane was used 3.) Car had myself and one suitcase 4.) I attempted my best to keep my cruising speed at 78 with about 3-4 Wot passes. 5.) External temperature was between 25-35 degrees Now after the v5 install and on map 1, I was able to achieve 25.7 mpg on the way there and then 25.9mpg on the way back with the above 1-5 variables meeting their criteria. Since I have to work in Jersey for a few more weeks, I will continue to monitor my mpg progress to see if things change drastically but I was obviously extremely surprised by the positive gain. |

With v5, Procede runs an additional 2-3 degrees of advance during idle/cruise. Probably not ideal for NOx emissions but really good fuel combustion efficiency and mpg.

What's the trigger for "cruise" conditions? Cruise Control active? Steady speed/RPM over X time? Or texting while driving?

By cruise, i mean low load conditions. The advance actually extends into low boost conditions (2-3psi) as well. Which is why the new maps feel so seamless as it transitions from cruise to light boost.

Now if Shiv would be nice and allow for advancing ignition under full load beyond the stock set point, a lot of us meth heads would be quite happy. My turbos are begging you Shiv!

Also, if the fuel is being enriched by the tune, (but hidden to the DME), that may also cause a higher reading. FYI: Yesteday I did a similar 300+ mile trip to vegas. Similar hilly terrain with a couple of 4000ft+ summits. 28.6mpg indicated on the way there. 31.3 mpg indicated on the way back. (still over 30mpg using the gas pump calculations.) Either way, a very impressive 312.4 miles, with a 194 mile indicated range left, and 2 ticks below 1/2 tank remaining.

During the last long high way trip (Chicago - Denver - Chicago) the car got average of 29.35 mpg, and that was done last winter!

I think some of the inaccuracy in the MPG gauge is due to the speedometer being off around 3 mph above 70. Get your car in the interstate, pull out a handheld GPS or Garmin and you'll notice your speedo is off. I went one size on my rear tires (19in style 231 wheels) to a 265 series, and now my speedo is spot on with the GPS. When I did so, my indicated average MPG dropped about 1.5-1.8 MPG. You will read a higher MPG cause the computer thinks you're traveling faster than you actually are.

You can go into the hidden menus on the display and see what the speedo reads and what the car actually thinks it is doing. Maybe that is the GPS iDrive reading in the hidden menu though and not available if you don't have GPS/Nav. Not sure. And it is in KM/hr...not MPH all that info.

actually, it's 4% slower. 100 MPH GPS verified is actually 96 MPH. 80 MPH shows 77 MPH, etc.

Correct. By increasing the size of the rear tires by one size will perfectly calibrate the speedo, due to the increased diameter. Plus the car looks a little meaner with one size larger front and rear (to the same size as the M3 if you are running the 19" wheels ) Of course if you have an Xi, you have to replace both front and rear up one size at the same time.

I used my calculations based off pump estimates and not the car computer. On average I fill 14.5-15.0 gallons to every 370 miles based off when the pump clicks.
I know this isn't an exact science but I've always used this method prior to my tune and my averages always came out to around the same 23mpg so it's safe for me to assume that this method works as well with a tune. As for people thinking 25.6 is low. I suppose it is compared to you 35i guys getting into the 30's but the XI obviously isn't going to get into that range and I've accepted that. My point was a comparison to my prior numbers and not to other rwd cars. Also, my car has 17k miles on the odometer so it should be in it's prime in terms of performance. Comparatively, my wife has a g35x and she can't sniff 23mpg on the highway with her car. |

when i switched to the stock m3 rims/tires it seems to have calibrated the speedo. tested all the way up to 100mph and it was spot on with three different gps units. it drove me nuts for a while because my car got noticeably "slower" when i switched the tires and did 0-100, 60-100, 60-130 times via procede logs to compare to the stock tires only to figure this out. i put the stockers back in and verified ~4% optimism on the speedo's display.
