Help! Service Engine Light soon!
Recently, my service engine light soon light keeps coming on every few days and will stay on until I run for so many miles. This is not gas cap related as I have not gotten gas and I know the symptoms of why this could be happening.
The problem started last week right after an oil change. I went to Valvoline and got synpower fully synthetic 5w-30. The car drives great but when I stop at a light with the car in gear the RPMs occasionally will jumbo from idle (750) to over 1000 for like 1 second. This triggers the "service engine light"..The light goes off after a few drives but will happen again, same cause. Did I pick the wrong oil? Could they have used the wrong oil filter (there had to try 3 different filters to sniff the correct one. Any advice? David Clarksville, TN |

You need to check for codes. See my sig.

If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

So what is your confidence level that the shop you took your car to knew what they were doing. First off they used an unapproved oil. Second, it took three tries for them the sniff the correct oilfilter (not sure why they were sniffing the fliter in the first place). So my bet is they were clueless on changing oil in a BMW and have obviously done something wrong (like possibly added too much oil to the engine, or still have the wrong oil filter in it). Take your car to a real BMW mechanic had have the oil changed using BMW parts and oil.
