2011 335D?
What are your thoughts on this car?
Will it have the HPFP issues that the N54 335i has? And owners, what is the gas mileage like? Tune-ability and is the engine loud? Thanks! |

Had one as a service loaner, excellent car. Mileage is excellent, you could easily get 750km to a tank. If you drove it pure hwy you should be able to get 1000km to a tank.
The engine has a nice sound to it. I find it louder than my car. |

Very nice car, had it out for a test drive for ~1 hour last year. Again, I harp: 335xd Touring with a manual transmission please!

When I started shopping for my car, I was more interested in the 335d. However, I wasn't sure having 425 lb-ft all at the rear was a good idea in Canadian winter. A 335d with xDrive makes way more sense. Not sure why BMW didn't offer one (especially when they've figured out the connectology with the X5d). |

I love mine. Its plenty powerful for me in stock form. That JBD is really quite tempting, but I don't want risking shadow codes on a leased car since I don't have a BT cable. You still hear a little of that diesel noise during idle (just as loud as a 2.0T if not quieter) to about 1200rpm, but changes to a deep baritone growl after 1500rpm. The ludicrous amount of torque makes it feel like you're driving a V8 around town.
My fuel economy hasn't been particularly impressive compared to others, but I'm very satisfied with what I'm getting. I'm averaging 10L/100km in mainly city driving with various elevation changes (0-200m). I consider this very good since my previous car with a 2.0T (Audi) did around 11-12L/100km for the same route. I got about 8.7L/100km on my last tank doing 50hwy/50city. The best I've seen so far was about 6.5L/100km on the highway when I drove down to the states. I still can't fault with this engine. While I've had 2 unscheduled dealer visits due to EGR related issues, it was solved in no more than a day. Overall, I think that the 335d is one of the best daily driver available in the market today. The low end torque is just amazing around town, and unlike most diesel it still has a lot of power for high speed runs without sacrificing fuel economy. *Diesel engines have utilized the HPFP for a very long time. The HPFP is actually a technology that was first used in diesel engines and eventually found its way into a gasoline engine due to its efficient nature. I would say that the HPFP in diesel engines are very reliable given that there are millions of BMW, Mercedes, Audi, and VW diesels around the world that have been using the technology for tens of years. |

I love mine, it's very responsive and fast as hell. So far in terms of fuel economy, on the highway I usually average about 5 ltr/100km and I am usually travelling at 120km/hr. (1150km/tank on the highway) Smooth car and very torquie!!! Driving in winter is not bad, I have set of wintes on but the torque of course triggers the traction control. I would highly recommend this machin to anyone interested. That being said, one problem I have is the soft suspension on straight-a-ways.. I bit too soft for my liking but it could be the fact that I went from a sports package to a non sport package 335d. On corners though, the legendary BMW reputation comes around.
hope this helps!!! |

It's great! 50,000km on mine now and it still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. On the highway I can get 1000-1050km if I stay close to the limit. I've driven through two winters and have no problem whatsoever - dedicated winters on E39 M5 reps, so it still looks okay plowing through the snow -- x-drive would be a waste, IMO. Frankly, I'm not sure an E9X x-drive transfer case could handle the torque.
Cheers D

Im also considering a 335d, im just stuck between the 335d, 335is, and m3.
The fuel economy is what is pushing me towards the diesel. but the m3 is just . . .

In 50,000km, I have yet to have to add any DEF myself...and even if I had, it's would not be much harder than re-filling your windshield fluid -- pop cover, remove cap, screw on bottle, squeeze, stop squeezing, remove bottle, replace cap, re-fit cover. Regards D.

My brother recently bought a 335d. Fantastic machine! He regularly gets 850-925kms per tank and the power is intoxicating. The torque needs to be experienced to be appreciated especially at the low end. My 335xi seems slow up to 50kph compared to the 335d. On the highway passing power of the D is astounding! Not to mentioned we both fill our cars with $75+ worth of gas/diesel and I only get 500-550kms per tank. Going forward if fuel averages $1.50-1.80 per litre the demand for diesel is almost certain to increase.
Cruising at 120kph the RPM's are only 1300-1500 which makes it an excellent, quite and smooth cruiser. It does however seem that the chassis is on the softer side. In addition at start up it is a little louder than gas but once it warms up it is quieter. My wish? Please put this engine in a coupe, possibly with a 6MT! PLEASE!

I don't think a MT version of the 335d is available anywhere. I thought it had something to do with not being able to fit a large enough clutch into a car the size of a 3 series for that kind of torque.
I was tempted by the 335d, but ended up signing a purchase agreement for a 335i sedan. I've only actually seen one 335d on the road here, but when it took off, it disappeared pretty quickly. |
