Armrest annoying?

OK, this might be really picky and I know I havent gotten mine yet(told its arriving in April). But on my test drives, I felt the armrest ended right where my elbow would sit when the palm is on the shifter. You cant move it forward so I was wondering if theres an extension available or if anyone else has this issue?

Alex
There is nothing available as of yet. In europe they have the split armrest but I dont know if it does what your talking about. PM KSFrogman and he will tell you because he has it.

I'm used to it now, but I traded a Passat W8 for my E90 and it had a sliding armrest. I admit that it would be nice if the armrest could slide forward a few inches.

Oh, great... now I'm going to notice it again. Thanks!

I know what you are talking about, I used to have this issue in my E46 330Cic as well, test driving the new 3 Series revealed the same issue all over again, it started bothering me after sitting 10 minutes in it and I know on long trips that the muscles in my shoulder would start to hurt alot. I just wish that you had the option to leave the armrest away and have a real low tunnel/console between the front seats.

BMW's approach for the last few years seems to be to give you an armrest that's almost in the right place.

The best BMW armrest I've had was my '92 E34. There was a narrow armrest mounted on the on the inside of the backrest on each of the front seats. I was able to find just the right spot that it worked for long highway trips, but didn't interfere with handbrake use or shifting. One of my dog's favorite spots in the car was lying across my lap with his head across my forearm. (And I had to apologize to him when I needed that arm to shift.)

I hear you! The sliding armrest is sold here either as a factory option, or an accessory. I'm sure there's nothing to stop you ordering one specially if you have the part number. I suppose it's pretty expensive for what it is, especially if you need the leather version as I did, but it is worth it IMHO and only takes about 5 minutes to install. There is a good DIY posted on here somewhere.

Thanks for the PM HyperM3. Yes, I totally understand what you have noticed. It was one of the first issues I had with the E90. When shifting, my funny bone (elbow) would hit the armrest. I love the split armrest. I can pull it forward and avoid this problem.

I haven't noticed a problem but then again I'm 6'4'' and the seat has to be moved far enough back that it puts me in a good armrest position.

Yes, I believe so. This is more expensive than the imitation leather. The real leather may not last as long with constant rubbing.

hahah this was the first thing that bothered me as well. When I shifted from 1-2 or from 3-4 it would be okay, but if I shifted from 2-3 or 4-5, my elbow would have to leave the arm rest. At first, I thought it was because of my short Asian arms. It took me a while to get used to it.

Rumor has it that there is a statistical correlation between your forearm and foot length. The distance between your wrist and elbow is about the same as the length of your foot. Check it out. My foot is a size 8.

+1, I guess the armrest works better for taller people. I have no issues either and I'm 6' 2".

LMFAO. No your not short by any means, just not tall like E90Toad and I. I just tested ksfrogman's theory about foot length to forearm length and they are near identicle. I have size 12 feet and my elbow to wrist is about the same length. Also my seat position puts my shoulder near even with the beam inbetween the front and rear doors and my elbow sits comfortably on the armrest with palm relaxed on the shifter.

What's this tell you? BMW made the car for tall whitey's, not short asains jk. Maybe it's all about seating position? move the seat around some to see if you can find a better way of sitting w/o messing up the driving position but also allowing the armrest to be used.
