e92, Hardwiring Escort into fusebox.

Hey, I saw a couple DIYs for this but both were V1's and neither was into the fuse box. Before I start, this DIY is essentially written by Josh49, who walked me through it step by step.

Reference this thread: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...e+box+hardwire

So you have your Escort, your hardwire cable (which comes with a little tap clamp), and your mini-fuse tap (see here: http://www.anythinggps.com/browsepro...-100-Pack.HTML)

We are going to hardwire into the fuse box and use the homelink/pdc fuse so the detector goes off/on when you start the car. It also has the protection of it's own fuse, which I like.

First, use the little blue clamp that came with the hardwire cable to clamp it to the fuse tap, like this:

Now open the glovebox and remove the fuse box cover.

Take out fuse #28 and connect it to the fuse tap (in the pic above you can see my fuse #28 is already connected to the tap), then insert the tap into the fuse:

Now ground the wire using the ground. I unscrewed the hex bolt shown and just grounded using that, the ground should screw right on to the bolt, then the bolt back into the metal:

Before you go any further remember to make sure it works. Plug in the escort and turn the car on, it should fire right up. Mine didn't, and I got all pissed and started checking connections and stuff, turns out my fuse tap was in upside down, so if yours doesn't work first time flip the fuse tap. For me it was the counter-intuitive direction (wire facing up).

Wire running time. I have the hardwire cable with the little remote mute box, some will have this some won't. If you have it follow this next step, if not skip it.

I ran the box and both wires through the glovebox arm, then like this:

Use a flathead screwdriver to push it into the opening so it stays, you'll have two wires at this point.

Now, run the telephone wire back from the remote box back through the glovebox and out the other side (for those of you without the remove box just run it out this side to start):

Run the wire up the side of the dash, use a plastic tool like a small spatula or a butter knife to lightly pull up the rubber gasket and put the wire underneath, it isn't hard. Keep running it under the gasket all the way up, like this:

When you get to the top of the A-pillar run the wire behind the a-pillar (as shown) and then under the headliner (it tucks right in under the headliner neat the window). You can tuck any excess into the headliner, you'll only need ~4 inches showing or less.

That's it. Use the supplied velcro to hold down the remote box, like this:

That's because I posted it about 20 minutes after you posted your thread.

Don't sweat being called an ass, you'll get used to it here.

Just saw this thread. First off, great writeup and great pictures. Thanks for the sentence up top.

A few comments for you -

Your interior is immaculate. Holy crap. Your dash, radio, and cd/dvd slots bring a tear to my eye. Is that all from the aerospace 303? What are you using specifically around the buttons/electronics?

If I recall from my Passport, there was a rear looking detector on the top of the unit in a bump up facing backwards. If that is true, it looks like in your current setup you might be blocking that rear looking sensor. Are you/Is there one/do you not care. Just curious and wanted to point that out..

Great writeup, and please move closer to Boston so you can detail my car..

Ya, good old 303. I love that stuff.

I didn't even think about the rear facing bump, thanks for the tip. I will adjust accordingly.

Wouldn't you be blocking the rear detector if it's that high?

Ok, just finally hardwired my car but the unit doesnt shut off. It stays on tapped to that fuse(second row, third from right). This apparently is the homelink fuse. Is this fuse always "hot"? Theres no difference when I turn on the accessories, engine, off all. The unit just stays on without doing any startup procedures or shutting off.

Any suggestions?

Something is wrong or you have the wrong fuse. The homelink fuse will only turn on when the ignition is on, and will turn off when the car is off.

Hmm, I gotta go check then. Also, theres nothing in the two slots next to mine whereas theyre filled in yours.

(edit) Ok just ran out and checked. Seems that the fuse for me in the same position is one of the "Start/Stop" fuses. My homelink fuse was located all the way on the other side of the box.

Its all working perfectly now. Thanks again.

Glad you got it working. Must be a different fuse layout for the e90/e92.

What would happen if you dont use the fuse tap, and just plug the wire right into the fuse box, and remove the fuse that was in there?

Im asking because I dont know where I can find a fuse tap, maybe radio shack?
