How to calculate the cost of Performance Parts/upgrades when selling your car
What is the normal method (if there is such a thing) for determining the value on parts that have been added to an OEM car? For instance, if a 2008 335 within the last year had (Dinan Stage II software, BMW Performance Exhaust , mtech appearance pkg) added on to it, how are the values of these parts now calculated into the asking price? Would the value of these parts now be 50%, of what they were new?
Obviously these part have depreciated in value. I can get the value of the OEM car off of NADA, KBB, etc. however just trying to determine how to properly price out these parts above and beyond the value of the OEM car itself. Thanks... |

I think it is half the price of all your mods, not including labor.

telling the truth no one really wants a car that has been modded... you make the assumption that the car has been abused... It;s prob better if you take them off and sell them separately

+1, coming from someone who just bought a 07 335i e92. I avoided anything and everything that looked like it had seen mods.

In my case I'm looking to sell my 335i Sedan. I had installed an after market FMIC, big improvement over stock for a number of reasons. And other then that put on M3 Suspension upgrades, which were fron control arms, front and rear sway bars, BMW performance springs, KONI Yellow front and rear structs, M3 upper rear link kit. Big improvements over the OEM vehicle.
I accept the fact I'll take a loss, but its nothing installed which will effect long term reliability. For somebody purchasing, they'll get a great car with a much better handling and ride quality. |

Mods will reduce the value of your car. It either won't be the mods they want or they will (often rightly) assume that the car has been abused.
I won't buy a car with any evidence of prior mods. So, to answer the OPs question, the value of the mods have depreciated 100% and the value of a previously or currently modded car has declined by at least 20% from a similar unmodded car. The truth hurts sometime. |

Re: How to calculate the cost of Performance Parts/upgrades when selling your car.
Aftermarket mods add $0 to the wholesale/retail value of a car, and as a few people have already mentioned, it can make the car less desirable to many potential buyers (due to aesthetics, warranty issues, etc.). That's the financial downside of moding a BMW. Of course, you may get lucky and find a buyer who wants your moded car the way it is, but what are the actual chances of finding a buyer who thinks your mods are as valuable and/or cool as you think they are? IMO, you're better off putting the car back to stock and trying to sell the mods separately. You may even get up to 40-cents on the dollar parting them out if you're lucky.

I'll see what happens, but the labor to remove and put back to stock is to me redundant. And despite the opinions presented, don't know that I agree. Although I get the points made. Removing the FMIC is no big deal, the labor for springs, shocks, sway bars etc is to me mute. The BMW performance springs and koni yellows are very desirable. Plus all other suspension upgrades were M3 components. So we'll see...
