Kind of ticked off about my MPG
Currently I am getting 16.9 mph and I am starting to see a downward trend. The reason why it bothers me is because I rarely redline the car and drive casual 95% of the time. Sure, there are spirited bursts of 5k rpm here and there, but who doesn't do that...I hear reports of 21-25mpg on the 335i and I am floored, I don't get it..I don't idle the car at warmup (thought I used to because I never knew it was bad) and I don't accelerate hard(er) until it is fully warmed up...
I am using Shell V-Power 93 octane and my driving is about 98% city. |

Its the city driving that kills you, all those times the car remains stationary is accounted. My OBC reads out 13-18mpg in heavy city driving (resets after every tank full).

how new is your car (how many miles you have). You have manual or auto trany? It should get better with age. I know I am not helping but I get 27 mpg daily on my e90 330.

it has alot to do with driving habits I think, I get about 14MPG on my suppose to be 16-18mpg. I drive between 3-4th gear most times, and maybe 25% of the time I'll take it to 5th, and never see 6th gear on my daily average drive.
I like torqueky drives, maybe you're just like me., therefore we have to pay the price |

That sounds about right, city driving really brings the mpg down

i have 1500 miles, manual trans -- same exact sentiments as yourself.
but i also have 98% city driving, so don't feel too bad. a little off topic, but I'm just bummed that baltimore/DC area has CHEVRON/TEXACO -- NYC only has VPowerShell and ultra94Sunoco. the rest sucks?!

Sounds about right. My 330i should get slightly better mileage than your 335i. When my car was new, 98% city driving would give me about 16mpg. Post break-in, that number has gone up to -- I don't know, maybe 17-18mpg in city driving.
That said, I get 30+mpg on the highway and I'm happy with the mpg on this car.

I'm barely getting 14-15 with easy driving in Brooklyn on 330Ci MT and i keep RPMs under 2K all the time It's the traffic lights on every short block, this is why you get lower MPGs Your downward trend is because of cold weather. Car doesnt roll as freely as in warm weather (cold ball bearings, etc) |

+ 15 on the city driving. 1st gear acceleration is the worst thing possible for gas mileage. You get 5mpg tops even with the slowest accel. A decent accel will net you about 2mpg while you are doing it. Me thats why I always drive the extra 10 miles on the highway, its quicker and better mileage on the 45 min trip.

try coasting (non or very light throttle) toward red lights more... the auto tranny should down shift and slow you down on compression.
Saves brakes and saves gas. Also, let the engine break in too... when my car had about 7000 km on it, I was averaging about 10.5 liters/100km fuel consumption. Once I came back from my summer road trip and had approximately 20,000 km on it, I was averaging 9.0 to 9.5 liters/100km all in the city. Driving habits and break in will improve your economy. If you get stuck in stop-and-go alot or get a lot of cold weather, there is nothing you can do against that! I find that my consumption during winter on my car is on average anywhere between 1.0 - 2.5 liters/100km worse than during warmer summer months. |
