BMW Comprehensive Extended Warranty

I've got the comprehensive extended warranty with £100 excess. Took it in as there was a warning light for the brake sensor.
Dealer says brake sensor NOT covered by warranty but looking at

http://www.bmw-warranty.co.uk/Pages/...e/Features.htm

I think it is? Anyone have similar experiences with BMW warranty?
Also, they found a noisy fan (in dashboard) which they say is covered but want the £100 excess. Fine, but they say even if warranty does cover sensor £100 excess applies again ie it's per item, so that'd be £200 excess in total for the 2 items.
Anyone know if this is correct?
If so, i would advise everyone to get £0 excess

I guess they will argue that a brake sensor is a "service items which will require periodic replacement" in which case it is excluded.

It does state "The excess is payable on any claims you make on the policy" so each item would be its own claim.

Also, if you take your car in with an intermittent fault, they charge you for the time they take NOT to find the fault. (If we had found a fault, it would have been covered, Sir. But as we didn't find anything, we charge for the time.)

Bye Bye BMW Warranty. Hello Warranty Direct (at a quarter of the price).

From my understanding of the BMW Extended Warranty, the excess is only payable once as it is per claim and not per item.

So if you take your car in for one item, but they then find 3 other things wrong, then you still only pay the excess once as it is all one claim.

Moot point for us as we elected to go with the NIL excess to avoid any ambiguity

However, if you are in any doubt, then I would speak with the Warranty people directly as they are very helpful and provide great support.

Mike, have you not pondered why WD are the quarter of the price?

From personal experience I'd not go near them even if they were the only company offering a warranty.

Thanks for the tip, i'll call BMW warranty and see what they say. Bet it's per item though!

I bought an RAC warranty when I bought my car and the more I think about it, the more i wonder if there's really any point in having a warranty - taking in consideration as to what it covers? Nearly everything that will go wrong with a modern car comes under 'wear and tear'. However, my warranty was the standard £300 job - looking at the RAC website - they have a 'Gold' option, which covers a massive range of problems - even things which most dealers would call 'wear and tear' under their manufacturers warranty. http://media.rac.co.uk/pdf/6071-rac-warranty.pdf

I made multiple claims last year on BMW warranty and some for multiple items.

I can confirm it is PER CLAIM not PER ITEM. If the dealer try and mess you around on this point: Take it to another dealer. Or atleast threaten to do so.

It is as simple as that. There is no way I am wrong on this one dude, as I've been through all this. If they won't play ball - go somewhere else.

Dave

ps Brake sensor clearly not a warranty claim. It is wear and tear.

Yes, I know they have had bad press, as have other Warranty providers. I just could not justify £1000+ per year for the BMW one (on a 3 year old 530d with less than 30k on the clock). I know I'm not covered as "comprehensively" as the BMW one, but I am (quite) confident that major items are covered and the £750 or more I am saving per year going with WD can cover the "minor" items. The car is now 6.5 years old, with 56k on the clock. I have been without DSC for a year as I can't be bothered to take it in, but otherwise it has been faultless. My previous E46 330d's both ran faultlessly and warranty-less to 100 and 120k (I do a LOT less miles nowadays!) before I defected to the 5er.
Still, back to a 3 for me now - on the lookout for a 335d Touring!

Thanks for the info guys. Cost me £60 for the brake sensor and my £100 excess on the blower. They said that without the insurance would have been £300 plus for the blower!

One of the main disadvantages with the BMW "insurance" warranty is that the car is now more than 3 years old and rapidly approaching the point where the trade in value is low. On other cars that I have owned in the past, when they have been more than c4 years old I have tended to look for a non-franchised specialist. This is not an option with the BMW warranty. Essentially, if you take up the warranty, you are insuring yourself for BMW dealer bills - much higher than an Indy.

The excess also means that if you make a claim, the first £100 or more is excluded; so, in reality, you are just looking at fairly major claims for it to be justifyable.

I prefer to save the money and take the risk.

Please be careful with Warranty Direct, I know them very well, run from a small office in Reading. I know people who have worked for them but left because their morals can't take it.

Make absolutely sure you have cast iron proof of VAT registered servicing and non expiring MOT. Also they claim excess is per claim but their definition of claim is per item not claim as normal people would see it (would household insurance separate DVD and tele claim if you were burgled?).

Their techs are also targeted on rejecting claims and reducing outlay - not really a sign of a company wanting to play fair.

Personally I would not touch as I would have no faith of them paying if needed. Too many people have found out the hard way.

I used to have a Warranty Direct policy on my old 535d - never again!

Now have a zero excess comprehensive BMW policy on my 330i (and peace of mind)

On the face of it it looks good, and if your car is as it was when it left the factory I could not find too much to grumble at, although I didn't get a quote.
However as with other warranties out there this exclusion would rule me and quite a few others out:

5. Any Vehicle modified since the date of manufacture
(in whole or in part) or a vehicle altered to be
powered by any alternative fuel source or type (such
as LPG) unless we make special provisions which
are noted on Your Plan Schedule.

It's £100 more than the equivalent BMW insurance for me though it does specifically cover the DPF and includes European recovery (an option not chosen by me for my BMW quotation) but it's a limit of £200 which would probably be useless in most cases.

I'm not overly impressed by the "all mechanical and electrical parts bit". The main thing that appeals to me is that it does seem to remove a lot of the opportunity for them to come up with an excuse to refuse your claim.

I was about to take out the BMW warranty and now I'm hesitating a little bit!

What was the problem with the sensor?

My little sister had a sensor where the cable had broken replaced FOC, car at three and a half years old but with the BMW extended warranty.

They said the sensor itself needed to be replaced.

I just had a 'phone call from WarrantyWise regarding my warranty enquiry. Turns out they have a special promotion at the moment.

I looked at the comprehensive BMW warranty (mechanical, electrical, and electronic) without the full recovery option (e.g. European recovery etc.) and with zero excess. It's £442

The nearest I could pick to that with WarrantyWise appeared to be the same coverage but with the full recovery option already included. Without the full recovery, BMW will only pick up your car to take to a dealer if you are more than half a mile from home. Not so with WarrantyWise. Also, WarrantyWise requires your car be serviced but not that it's by a BMW franchise so an Indie is perfectly acceptable. Their price was £522 but their special offer reduces it to £374!

Hmm. Anyone have any thoughts?
