did i ruin my clutch?
im over here in long island, ny and if u havent heard there was a huge blizzard in the area last night. my car was awesome throughout the day and i couldnt be anymore impressed with how well it handled the snow. the all wheel drive is amazing!! unfortunately on the way home last night at around 12-1 in the morning, i got stuck in a big ditch of snow and while i was trying to get out the clutch really started to smell and i am worried that i burnt it bad. i never had my foot completely down on the clutch but my foot was on the gas pretty far down for a couple of seconds. it drove fine throughout the day today but im worried that its gonna give out. i have burned my clutch before, dont ask why or how lol, and when that happened the car was driving fine for a couple of days after the incident that ruined my clutch happened before suddenly giving out. im afraid the same thing is going to happen again but my clutch was fully rebuilt a couple of months ago so im hoping this time it'll be fine. im assuming the clutch can take a little beating. let me know what u guys think! sorry for all the details but im just super worried since the clutch isnt covered anymore by the cpo.

On a separate note, clutches are covered under BMW Maintenance Program, not any of the warrantys

You should be fine, I learned on a 6 speed Mini. I "burned" the clutch so to speak where is smelled and I was super worried. But, 4 years later the thing drove like a champ. If it is driving ok now and the clutch still is "crisp" and functional you should be fine.
Good luck in the snow!

Odds are, you'll never need to get your clutch replaced under Maintenance, but just like brakes, if they deem it needs to be replaced during Maintenance coverage, they'll replace it. Clutches are made out of a material similar to brake pads, so if you ride your clutch all the time, it will wear out faster, just like if you slammed on your brakes everywhere. Clutches don't usually have 'absolute failure', although in a theoretical sense its possible for the surrounding components to have absolute failure. It's very unlikely and shouldn't be of concern. If you're going to criticize the brother's use of question marks, you might want to check proper usage for your post.

That paragraph made him sound like an ignorant 16 year old - and the fact that he already burned out one clutch validates that. Now to be helpful. The smell of a burning clutch is never a good thing but there isn't much you can do about it now. Save up your allowance to pay for a new clutch when this one goes south.

I completely agree that a simple amount of literacy is appreciated in this forum (and the world). However I believe that a valid question deserves a valid response without nitpicking his writing skills. Not all of us are english majors, especially not me.

I don't mind traveling to visit my sister and old stomping grounds if the prices up there are cheaper than the Tampa area. $180 for 3M Ceramic down here.

The Op appears to have damaged a clutch already and seems to have done something similar again. While he makes fun of my comment about the smell of burning clutches, the fact remains that the smell is an indicator of something bad. How bad is really unknown at this point and only time will tell. Spinning your tires to get unstuck is not recommended as it will damage clutches, transmissions and differentials. Perhaps the OP got luck but he won't know for many miles.

$180 for ceramic is a steal. Try $250 for 3M Ceramic in DC Metro and $380 for Huper Optik.

It used to be $120 down here. What say you, Arctic330i? Is it cheaper or more expensive in Mecca?

Elchea you're right about that lol. However, this forum has been awesome to me besides one or two times including this one. At least cb was right about one thing, I did sound like a 16yr old by letting his arrogance get to me. Next time around I'll be more careful, I'm just hoping I don't have to pay for mistakes this time lol(fingers crossed).
