My windows were open this morning
It was very strange when I went to my drive way, the windows were open and the sunroof was open about halfway. But doors were locked.
I got home last night at around 1:30am and was very tired. I am trying to remember if I somehow accidentally pushed the open button on the FOB or if it was this morning when I was putting on my jacket but I am not sure on it can happen. I need to press and hold the button for a good 10-15 sec to open the windows and sunroof. I went back out around 9:30am I am just wondering since couple of my water bottles inside didn't freeze it was like -7 C (19.4 F) if I left it all night water should have started freezing.

The fob in your pocket could have hit something and opened them

happened to me one time over the summer, blamed it on an accident but now im paranoid about it and it drives me crazy. i cant sleep at night, i stare at it from as far away as my eyes can see to make sure the windows are closed, and sometimes i walk back when im out of range to make sure it didnt open. if im at work and it starts raining, i start panicking at my desk, wondering what could possibly be happening. my life will never be the same.

search the forum for a long prior thread on this. It's probably the driver's side lock module -- mine had to go back three times before they finally fixed it. Moisture gets inside and it goes nuts. That one is the master for all the locks and windows.
They replace it with an improved one, and add moisture sealing. Once fixed, the problem doesn't come back. |

Last year was at a party came back all the windows were down and the sunroof was open....this happened in December so you can imagine how cold the car had gotten. Just have your fob programmed to roll up the windows/close sunroof when you hold the lock button.
So if paranoia sets in just hold the lock button . |

Hmmm sounds like a common issue.
I was thinking for hours and how could this happen. The "open" button from the FOB isn't really soft touch, so you still need to press and hold it. I thought it was from my pocket but I needed to stay in a non moving position (for more than 10 sec) if something pressed the button. This shit is gonna bother me now. Luckily at least from my room I can see the driveway. Luckily it wasn't snowing last night or even this morning!

How about the trunk button? I have to hit the trunk button less than 5 feet away multiple times in order for it to open. Is that related to the lock module as well?

The "key" (sorry) to this knotty problem is that if the doors are LOCKED when you come back, with the windows down and roof open, it's the lock module. Just pressing "unlock" on the fob doesn't roll down windows and open the sunroof, and it doesn't leave the car locked, either.
Yes, if you hold the button down, it will open the windows and roof. But it still won't leave the car locked! The dealers know about this problem. There is a service bulletin out on it, and has been for a while. Search the forums, you'll find it. |

Pin 18 or 19 on the ds lock module. Improperly weather-sealed. Has been known to be a cause buy-backs when combined with other bad luck (ie, torrential downpours). NOT your imagination. A REAL issue. According to a shop foreman, issue dates back to E36 timeframe. |

Is this an issue with the FOB or the RF signal for the trunk?

Thanks for the confirmation! So I guess they didn't fix this on the 2011s! E36!?!? WTF!

FWIW it's a very common MINI problem too.... both first and second generation cars. Why BMW can't figure out how to seal the electronics in the front doors is amazing to me.

This may not be right. In many cars (not sure about the E9X) if you unlock remotely but don't open the door within some specified amount of time, the door relocks. If that's the case, you could cause the problem with an inadvertent press of the remote.

Here is the earlier thread, when it happened to me. SA showed me the TSB when it went back to be fixed again. I don't have the bulletin number, though.
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=354394 If you want to prove beyond a doubt this is the problem, turn off the "relock" option on your car. Then, the next time you find it open and locked, you'll know! |
