I've just picked up a black 08' 335i coupe last week.

I'm really impressed with the car and with 28k on the clock looks to have been well cared for by the previous owner.

However with the weather the car was rarely used over the week.

After 200 miles the service light comes on when I start the engine, then goes out after a few seconds although the next service is 2000 miles away.

When you go through the service indicators the error/light is still there.

The fault light that I can see, but not in the BMW manual, is a red circle with zig zag lines through the middle and a line either side.

In the manual the coolant is a square with zig zag lines.

The coolant level looks fine but there was a few green dots on the driveway snow the other morning but I thought I would have been my sisters Punto who was visiting.

Can anyone assist to what the fault is?

Welcome, and congrats on the new car.

Is it the symbol for the Brake Fluid? I don't see anything else in the manual that looks like what you are describing.

It turns out it is the brake fluid light and the reason it's on is because it's overdue a brake fluid change. All the levels look fine and there is no signs of any loss and the green dots must have been something else.

A little angry that the dealer never carried out the brake fluid change as the agreement was to carry out any required servicing before buying the car.

It's my first BMW, or premium brand car for that matter and I've got a lot to learn.

I failed badly at find the dip stick test the other day. Spent about 5 minutes looking for it and had to admit defeat and read the instruction manual. Can't say I have ever come across a car without a dip stick before and I feel a little uneasy trusting a senson to monitor oil levels. How would you ever know if the sensor failed or gave a false reading?

The snow is finally clearing over here in Scotland, so looking forward to some nice dry roads to have a proper drive.

With all the salt and grit on the roads the car is very dirty at the moment.

Once the weather picks up I intend spending time giving the car a going over with my detailing kit to get it gleaming again. The condition of the bodywork is really good. There are no dents or dings anywhere on the body.

I guess it's a common site on here but here is mine although very dirty. You may notice in Scotland we sit on the right side of the car!

Sweet, I guessed the correct warning light. Not bad for being a week old BMW owner!

Trust the oil sensor. Most drivers never check oil level anyway, and most don't do it correctly even if they check it. The technology is much more reliable than eyeballing a dip stick so just go with it and check it each time you've filled up.
