335d Problem

First of all, let me reiterate that I love the car. However, with 10k on the clock, it has been in twice for an issue with the urea injection system, specifically the metering valve. The first time it was cleaned, this time replaced. I also get a strong burning smell periodically that may be related. My new SA has been great, but I wonder if I've stumbled across its "hpfp".

Anyone else have this problem?

x5d with similar mileage, just short of 11,000 miles, no problems to report. It had a recall to be reprogrammed with its first service, but thats it.

Hopefully you will be trouble free from here on.

Apart from a couple of service updates my d has been running perfectly. The particulate filter was replaced and the centre iDrive control was sticky so they replaced that too.

Sorry to hear about your issue, Im sure they will take good care of you.

i just had a metering valve issue. I felt like my car ran better when it was faulty and got better mileage too....

I've got 9500 miles on her. Keep in mind we have a halo car. BMW's first diesel in the USA and their first diesels w/ Urea ever! I love the car too much to ever let any issues bug me and those shitty loaners make me appreciate mine more! Good luck and merry x-mas!

Between this and an HPFP issue, I'll take this any day. The car was running just fine. I would not have known there was a problem if not for the warning light.

I haven't had any problems with the Urea system so far; only a phantom error code that was remedied with the software update. Note the burning smell is not a symptom of your problem, though, it's actually a normal side effect of the diesel particulate filter cleaning itself off.

Two unscheduled visits to the dealer both concerning EGR. The first one was more severe with car running on safe mode / limp mode. The second visit was for an unknown SES light that cleared itself after a couple of days, but I decided to drop it off anyways. They found the SES to be another EGR related issue. The SA told me they will be ordering a new part if it happens again for the third time.

My car is sitting at around 15k kms now.

2010 with almost 20K miles, and no issues (other than the software update at my last regular visit). These cars are terrific!

I haven't had any problems, but the SA's have said that the cars that have those problems tend to not be driven as much. Meaning it's short trips, not mileage. The cars that have longer trips seem to fair better.

Just what I've heard.

Interesting. So maybe just sitting around with no sloshing or warmth from a driven car could cause some kind of build up/scum/separation/crystalization or something in the urea fluid which would plug up the system.

Over the 16mths with my car, I've gone to the dealer twice to get the SCR valve cleaned (I believe it was error 4D17/15). This occurs each and every time so far when I'm running near empty. (I've tested this) The diesel engines should not be running with less than 1/4 tank, otherwise air can get into the fuel system and turn on SES light. I have a BT scanner so I can clear these codes once they are shown. They are usually shadow codes and doesn't cause any power reduction.

Mine went to the dealer with an SES light about a month after I bought it. SA said the DEF valve was clogged with DEF crystals. They cleaned it, and everything has been fine since. Crossing my fingers.

I wouldn't say that. For the 23 thousand miles I've had my car I've almost always run the tank down to 1/8 or less and I have yet to experience any problems.

The fuel light comes on almost every time the X5 gets a fill up, no problems here.

It is bad to get air in the fuel lines (very bad, I have had some experience in a Kenworth with a broken fuel gauge...and a tractor with stupid employees), that isn't going to happen before the fuel light comes on in one of these cars. The fuel gauges are very conservative, and I suspect (correct me if I'm wrong) that these engines are self priming.

My recollection was that the first time it occurred there was a strong, burnt sugar smell. Since then it, on the times that the cycle has run, I've been able to smell a faint burning smell. Faint.

Thank You! I had a burning smell and i asked a service manager but he said it's just common with the diesels. He didn't explain it like you just did so thanks for settling my concern with it.

You're welcome kind of getting off topic here, but id you're curious, the reason it smells is because the car is literally burning the built up gunk from the filter. That's why it's also normal if you notice the engine revving unusually high for a few minutes, or if the sound changes slightly. It's all normal.

Smells sort of like an oven on a cleaning cycle. Or burnt marshmallows. It's all part of the fun!

I'm usually on the highway during a regen, so I don't smell anything. I can tell though, because the fuel consumption increases slightly for a few minutes.
