Is my color scheme THAT messed up?!??

Hi all....

Been lurking and reading posts for 3 or 4 months now, and I've decided to join up! I really like the relaxed atmosphere and of course, I'm fond of the major topic of discussion!

I plan to order up an E92 later this year. Just like when I ordered my MINI, I joined a forum several months in advance to learn more and get acquainted with the community.

Here's my proposed spec:
E92 335i in Space Gray over Saddle Brown with wood trim. (Haven't decided between Light Poplar and Burl Walnut yet.)
6 Speed Manual
Sport
Premium
Cold Weather
Comfort Access
Power Sunshade
Park Distance Control
Performance Center Delivery
Can't decide on Nav....

I have been to several dealerships hoping to find something similar to this color scheme with no success. I was told that this is a "non-standard" configuration and that it would require a $5000 deposit to order. The problems (in their opinion) are the manual transmission and the Saddle Brown in a Space Gray car. Is my taste THAT screwed up? I really really like the Saddle Brown. Not only is the color rich and inviting, it's not something you see very often at least in this area.

Right now, I'm driving a MINI Cooer S (John Cooper Works) in Chili Red with a Union Jack on the roof, white wheels, and tan/black two tone interior...admittedly overdone and kinda tacky, but cool looking anyway (to me)

If I could get the E92 I truly wanted, it'd be Steel Gray from the old E46 color pallet.

Any advice or comments?

It may be the 6-mt that's the issue, as well. Drop the 5K and order what you want.

Call and talk to another salesman at the same dealer and see if a different SA gives you shit. If he doesn't, deal with that guy and when you walk in to order from the other guy it'll be : I'd try and find another dealer, unless they're giving you a good price.

I don't think there is anything wrong with your color combination. I am almost positive I have seen that combination in the "color" thread.

I agree that the manual transmission in a highly optioned car is probably the biggest issue with your dealer (my dealer thought the same thing when I placed my order). Either way, there is no reason to place a $5000 deposit. I put down $500 when I ordered mine.

You may even consider using a non-local dealer since you are doing a performance center delivery. I don't know how things work in NW GA, but there are excellent deals through dealers in the northeast.

You have very good taste my friend. Your car will look similar to my M3 (except for the wood trim). My CA was also weary of my combo choice when I ordered my E46 M3 (Silver Grey / Cinnamon) until they all saw in person. Everybody I know loves my combo it is classy yet sporty and uncommon.

You are the paying customer. Get what you want.

If I were you, I would not hesitate leaving $5000 as a deposit if it is equal or lower than your planned downpayment (assuming you are buying the car and not leasing).

Personally I can't stand wood interior but it's your choice.

With a car in that spec you should go for Auto transmission. In the UK you would lose out when you came to the resale value.

Silver is also far to popular in the UK, most company vehicles are silver.

Actually, I have a good relationship with a MA (Motoring Advisor) on the MINI side of an Atlanta dealership... She is so well liked by customers that she somehow has gotten permission to take orders for BMW's and sell them through the MINI side of the dealership when a customer insists. She won't give me any crap about the color nor the manual transmission. MINI customers are pretty adamant about getting their exact spec and the MA's are used to that. Sticker price is the best deal I can get, but the MINI gal will waive the doc fee and all the hidden fees since I have sent her so many referrals. I don't want to make them hate me too much, but I think buying a BMW through the MINI dealership might twist their tails just a little.

In the spirit of openmindedness, I posted to see if anyone had laid eyes on this combnation and found it to be hideous.

PS El Capitan, you INDEED do have the M3 that I often fantasized about! It is gorgeous. I saw a website by the owner of a similar M3 who ordered the Europe only Maple Wood trim and swapped it for the aluminum. It was awesome looking. Some folks just aren't as fired up about wood as I am, but in my other life, I shoot a lot of clay targets and since I'm constantly around high grade shotguns, I really love the natural beauty of highly figured woodwork. I even want to order the illuminated wood shift knob like my buddy's E39 540i had.

Looks good with alum trim as seen here. I think if you go with a wood trim, the gray poplar would be nice.

If I wasn't getting coral red I would have gotten saddle brown interior for my space gray e92. saddle brown is a very warm color, classic european styling in my opinion.

I only put $1000 down, and so should you. I am guessing that because they claim this is an uncommon combination, they want more down from you in case you change your mind because they think it will be harder to sell. $5k down is ridiculous

Trust me, this car is so hot right now, plus you have a good color combo, so even if you did change your mind the dealer will be able to sell the car

I don't buy my car with its resale value in mind. Cars are not investments...they lose value as soon as you sit in the seat. Get what you want, how you want, when you want. 10% of total price for a deposit is reasonable.

The above pic with the aluminum looks great.

Pics of your mini? It sounds pretty cool.

My CA said my montego blue/saddle/aluminum was nonstandard, but he didn't mention it as a reason for a $5000 deposit! That just explained why they'd have to build one. I put $2k down. Pretty standard DP in my eyes

I swear next time if a CA tells me that my color combo is wack im gonna slap him. THere is no such thing as a "weird" color scheme. There's a reason why BMW allow you to custom order the cars. Who cares what the CAs think. If they keep that up you should just order the car and get your deposit back 2 weeks before the car comes in.

I see nothing wrong with the combo to justify the additional deposit. I think its a classy combo (I would pick the burl over the poplar with saddle).

I don't think its the 6MT issue, there are plenty here who ordered the 6MT. It goes with the car...

If the dealership persists to give you problems try considering performance center delivery just so that you have a wider choice of dealerships. GL.

Space grey & saddle brown are excellent.
Sticker (i.e. MSRP)? That is nuts. Get it via ED at 1k over invoice and save 5k.

The $5,000 deposit surprises me.

My dealership told me about a special order 330i with a very unique color combo. The customer ended up backing out of the deal, leaving the dealership stuck with the car. The customer got his full deposit back (which was nowhere close to $5,000!). The dealer made the car into its demo and, I imagine, sold it for much less than new later on.

Additionally, my car was a special order (red exterior and beige interior are not "recommended" together). My required deposit was only $500.
