I'm such a tool
Did an oil change on my 2006 330i 6MT Sprt/Prem, let her rip on the highway, smoke coming from car, pull over pop hood, oil everywhere! I didn't screw on the oil filter all the way, pressure built up and spewed. Get car towed back home, put car on jack stands, spend 3 hrs cleaning under carriage of car, get engine shampoo but the oil is literally everywhere (since it spewed while I was going 130km/hr). Over the course of the 3 days, put in a total of 3 liters oil.
I'm so embarrased, it's taken me 4 days to accept what a stupid mistake I made. Car is running the same as it's always been but wondering if there could be long term damage? Oil on belts, plugs, engine etc... |

That sucks! Years back I sold a 93 318i to a friend of mine. The car burnt a bit of oil so he had to top it up from time to time. One night, morning actually, at 3am he calls me and starts to rant about being stranded on the side of the road because the sh*t box I sold him crapped out.
Being a good friend, I decided to drive over and give him a hand. Turns out he had topped up the oil but left the cap off! Oil got all over the engine, a belt slipped off, car died. He owed me a few beer for that one!

Sorry about that, I am sure you'll be fine.
Once I did an oil chnage and the gasket from the old oil filter stayed on the car. I didn't notice it because everything there was oily and dirty. Double gaskets don't hold oil in in case you're wondering.

Looks like a live and learn mistake; shit happens. But I'm just curious as to how you made the error of not tightening down the filter housing cap. I could see if you were using a strap wrench to tighten the cap, got a phone call, or a hot chick stopped by or something and you forgot to finish tightening the cap because by looking at it it would look tight. However, if you were using a capwrench tool then you could be interruped and leave the capwrench tool on the cap, and then get back to it later with the tool as reminder that the cap was still in need of tightening.

I am sure it will be fine but it's an 06, aren't you due for an upgrade anyway's. No better time than now to start looking around the dealership.

Ouch. If it makes you feel any better I once couldn't get my rear rotors off. I hit it with a rubber mallet numerous times in every possible direction I could....it would budge.
I then realized my hand brake was on.....fail on my part. |

Thanks everyone, yeah I've been hearing the same thing about the oil is not damaging anything, in fact it is protecting/rust proofing for the winter
ENINTY, to answer your question about not tightening the oil filter...I wish I could say I had an excuse but I don't, that is what's so embarrassing. As I was tightening the filter housing it was getting harder to turn and the green dots lined up so I thought that is it. Afterwards I realized it had 2 more full turns to go and when the green dots lined up it wouldn't turn anymore. Then I knew it was fully tightened. I'm taking it to a detailer on Monday, getting full hand wash, then he's going to use a solvent (like dish soap) to take the oil of as it's all over the car, then wax and another engine shampoo |

As said, learn from the mistake. These cars hold plenty of oil, so I doubt there's any long term damage.

Been there done that. Not only don't "double" gaskets hold, but 6 quarts of new oil look just as bad on your driveway as old oil, and not much easier to clean. Fortunately I turned off the ignition on my old Honda the very very very moment I heard a weird squishing sound, so no harm done. Now I ~always~ check for this on my other cars. Can't really make this mistake with the N54.

eh, not the end of the world.
bright side: you'll wind up with the cleanest engine in town by the time you're done cleaning everything.
