Slight Delay When Transmission Engages

Hi guys,

My car (Automatic) has a split second delay when transmission engages if I press the acceletator pedal. This is when you are at STOP which means that you're foot is at the BRAKE pedal and about to drive the car. When I release the brake pedal and step on the Accelerator, there is a split second gap before the transmission gear engages. Thus, when you accidentally step on the accelerator faster, the car will jerk because the car is already in a high rev before it actually engages the transmission gear. Does anybody experience this on an E90?

My friend's E90 has this problem, I think it might have something to do with a locking torque converter. There is no "gear" engaging. Your car always has a tendency to go forward but the torque converter is spinning with no lockup.

Tranmission Issue

Thanks for the response. Is this going to be an expensive fix? I was thinking maybe transmission oil is low???

My 335 does the same thing. If you put it in sport mode it does not have this delay.

My 328i does this and not only is very annoying, it can be rather dangerous. When I press the pedal (generally under 15 MPH) the car will lag and then slam into gear. My dealership has reprogrammed the transmission which resulted in a slight improvement.

I experience the exact same issue but it's gotten a little bit better since I did the euro intake conversion.

this is currently happening to my car too. So I'm guessing this is normal and nothing there is no need to go to the dealer?

Maybe you should change the fluid? Although the pan states "lifetime", BMW in their service & warranty manual, requires fluid changes at 100,000 miles. I changed mine at 49k. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=367729

If no codes are being thrown use Chevron Techron fuel injector cleaner (concentrate). It solves rpm fluctuating upon cold start-up. Also, for most BMW problems start off by scanning your car with the Peake Research Tool. It contains the actual BMW codes. If you want to register a newly installed battery for free (just buy a $10 cable) and google/download BMWLogger

I think this is caused by the Neutral Idle Control, NIC.

This was also a problem for the "sticky brake" issue.

EDIT: Fluid won't do anything. Your transmission should act/feel the same way after a fluid change. If not, there' something else wrong with your transmission.

I just changed mine at 91K. I definitely feel better about it after seeing the old and new fluid side-by-side (I took your advice, Chriztofor, and put all the new fluid in a clean bucket). You can see the a bit of old pan and there is very little "fuzz" on the magnet which makes me feel good too. I plan to cut open the pan to see what's in the filter, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Don't listen to TurkeyBaster. ZF Lifeguard6 is NOT "the same as" or "just repackaged" (TurkeyBaster's claim) Motorcraft Mercon SP. One is red, the other is honey-colored. they smell different. Maybe Mercon SP meets the same specs, but i wasn't going to take that chance. I sent the Mercon back (except for the one quart I opened) and bought Lifeguard6.

As for shifting, there is definitely a different feel to the shift points and the "hardness" of shifts after the fluid change; not surprising given the state of the old fluid. I went ahead and reset my adaptations so as to let the ECU "learn" again, what with the mechanical part acting a bit differently now.

Maybe it's the placebo effect, but mine sure seems different after the change. I'd think at the very least, there's a viscosity difference between the old and new fluids.

Although you have a 325, this link might help explain what is going on. It would appear an update to your transmission software is probably in order, or just live with it.

^I've seen that TSB before. However, disabling the neutral idle control will decrease gas mileage.

That' why I choose this live with this.

I've never swapped my transmission fluid (on my E90) and I sounded pretty confident in my post so my apologies.

But in general, you shouldn't feel a significant difference in swapping the tranny fluid.

I am glad you found my DIY useful. If you cut the filter open please post pics in my DIY. Cheers and Merry Christmas.
