I wouldn't buy either.
For one thing, I already have a 328i -- I don't need two.

I love looking at the results, not a single TL voter at this point

well tl is quicker to 60 but driving dynamics are shot when you got almost 300hp on front wheels. I had a 04 V6 accord coupe with similar engine just a 3.0L instead of 3.5 and I know really well what understeer and torque steer are all about. If you dont care about how the car feels and its mostly comfort you are going for with some grunt at highway speeds get a tl.

Not a huge fan of the styling. Could never live with the torque steer from the FWD. But that's just me

I test drove one when shopping for my 335i, and...
The TL S-type is simply rubbish: Torque steer, understeer on curves, horrible transmission, bulky 328i doesn't have as much power, but it's a better car. |

Depends what the OP wants in a car. The TL-S is a nice car but not as sporting as the RWD 328i. It's larger, more powerful and more luxurious. It has way more features for the money than the 328i but does not drive as well as the BMW.

If the 08 TL-S has the SH-AWD, maybe.
I owned the CL-S in both an auto (2001) and 6 speed manual (2003). It was a great car, excellent fit and finish, and that manual tranny was AMAZING. Butter shifts, no notchyness. What I didn't like about the car was the FWD. It had 260HP, and the torque steer was brutal. Adding Comptech sway bars really helped the understeer, but it still liked to push into the corners. I've never been in the newer Acura's so I can't help much on that, but I do know that my '08 335xi is amazing for power/handling, but from the "luxurious" standpoint, it's really plain on the inside, just like my 01 and 03 CL's were. Obviously most people on this forum will bleed BMW, since this is a Bimmer forum, but I'd say drive the TL, and see what you think. If it has SH-AWD, I think it would be compariable to the 328, except you'd get a lot better reliability. |

I did a similar comparison about a year ago. The Acura is a very different animal compared to any 3-series. Drive them both in the same day. If driving is the deciding factor, you will be driving a 3-series. If bigger size is the deciding factor, you will be driving the Acura. The Acura had a great interior and felt more "luxury." Bigger, softer, squishy almost. Did not feel like the type of car that would get your blood pumping because it did not like to be driven fast, especially while on the go pedal. The 3-series was just a better car in most ways involving driving, stopping, turning, overall feel, etc. If I needed larger size / utility, the Acura was a hands down winner because it is a lot bigger and did offer more performance than the standard TL.

I had an Acura for 38 days after my 328 lease went up. I loathed it. LOATHED it.
I love lots of cars other than BMW's. But I bought the Acura on a practicality buy. HATED it so much that I bit the bullet and traded it in for Diego, the Spanish Diesel.

I'd go BMW for better driving dynamics first and foremost, but also for better looks. The '08 Type-S TL looks pretty good compared to the new body style, but I'm still not a fan. The new Acuras are straight up ugly. Also, while the 328i is definitely a slower car, you can drive it faster since it is so well balanced. I haven't driven a manual 328i, but it's supposed to move pretty well with the 6MT.

Drive 'em both, as has been suggested, and the decision will be more obvious. While the two cars are in the similar price bracket, they are different segments in the true sense of the word.
Acura - Larger, smoother ride, perhaps a more appointed cabin with the accouterments to coddle your needs, straight line faster, and finally FWD. BMW - Smaller, taught ride (harsh to some perhaps), more spartan interior, and RWD. I like the looks of the previous generation TL, the new one is just awful, but between these two cars the BMW gets my vote for the RWD aspect if nothing else. I simply prefer RWD. |

328i sedans are just about everywhere. 16 year old girls, 40 year old women, and men who can't afford (or for some reason didn't want) a 335i all love 328i sedans...
Only men opt for a TL-S as opposed to a normal TL. Go with the TL. It's faster in your daily commutes, more comfortable, more convenient, and looks less like a bitch car. If you're even considering a FWD car, the track is somewhere you'll never be. As much as I love BMW, I won't deny the TL's excellent value. |

I was going to include an Acura TL on my list of cars to test drive, but when I looked at its front end I crossed it out. Whoever designed that car, or all Acura late models must had some childhood bad experience with woodpeckers

I drove the previous model TL, and it was quite a nice car. but it is bigger and heavier than a 3 series, which you will definitely feel in the corners. The TSX is more in line with a 3 series as far as size and weight, and has much better handling than the TL.
Shame about what Acura did to the styling on their new cars though. |
