Hazard lights blinking under hard braking???

Hi all,

Just a quick question: is there a way to get the hazard lights blinking under hard braking, just like the euro models?

While it can be enabled via third party coding, it is NOT legal in the US and you may have insurance problems if you are involved in an accident.

The 3 series should have variable brake lights though; depending on how hard you apply the brake two additional brake lights illuminate.. so says the brochure anyways!

Yes you have the panic brake lights - adaptive brake lights. I have driven in Europe for years - I have not had them go on automatically - but when the traffic stops suddenly on the Autostrada it is normal to put them on to warn drivers coming up from behind.

I actually managed to get mine on. It was really slippery and I was going to stop in front of a roundabout, the abs system worked hard and then the hazzard light went on, didn't understand anything when it happend

Why? I remember seeing a car commercial on TV about the car turning the flashers on automatically after getting in a collision. Forget which company it was but it was like....

What if a car could automatically enable the hazards after experiencing a collision or something like that lol

bmw turns them on after a collision. During hard breaking your rear fog lights turn on

I hit the hazards if there is an emergency stop on the freeway just to give one more method of alert to the driver behind me!

Yeah, usually if traffic is about to come to a halt on the freeway I'll pump my brakes in one-second intervals before stopping to try and alert people that traffic is coming to a stop or I'll hit the hazards. It's odd that it is illegal to have the flashers auto-come on when stopping hard; I thought Audis and Mercedes did that.

If you were in a collision and your hazards turn on, that is not an insurance problem.

Actually, the progressive brake lights are a violation of FMVSS 108 as well since that requires "steady state" lighting.

A general rear lighting primer can be found here although there is something amiss if you find the entire document "interesting."

http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstr...MTRI-99-31.pdf

Accordingly, if there is a lighting device on a vehicle that does not meet the requirements, then it could lead to insurance liability issues in the case of an accident.

I can hear the "I didn't know he was slowing down, his lights just got brighter and started blinking - I thought it was an alien come to get me so I had to try and destroy it to save mankind."

Having spent some time in Deutschland and seeing this in practice, I use my hazards often when on the highway and having to come to a hard stop with fast moving traffic behind me. For me, it's instinctive, I just reach up and pop them on real quick to get the driver behind's attention.

bmw turns them on after a collision. During hard breaking your rear fog lights turn on
and then the battery blows out shutting them off automatically.
