1st snow in 335i
I must say....this is the worst car in snow I have ever owned. I had FWD cars with all-season tires < SCRATCH THAT, I had M3 with Dunlop DS-2 tires, and I had A4 with high performance winter tires.....none of them are as bad as 335i with Dunlop M3 tires...... Quattro in A4 and LSD in M3 made a world of difference ! with 335i and my winter tires i actually have to drive carefully now....i used to fly 60mph in deep snow...not any more. EDIT: I guess I just got scare the first time. I would probably take that FWD comparison out.....was driving on icy hills all day and you need either AWD, LSD, or better winter tires to handle those. Nothing that effects safety, just hard to launch the car from stand still Last edited by Kolyan2k; 07-12-2017 at 01:35 PM.. |

did you just list a bunch of cars all with features that help in the snow... then compare them to a RWD open diff sports car and say it was the worst out of all of them?
agreed with coolieman.. cool story brah but I will say this.. driving 60mph in deep snow... videos or it didn't happen |

it is a cool story....this is my 1st RWD open diff car. and there are shit lots of people on this forum that think 335i is better in snow then M3, just like many people think LSD is just for track. My M3 was not even close to 335i although it had studless tires. I obviously dont have vids, but I actually got out in baddest storms in New England and just enjoyed driving on highway pack with snow....i couldn't believe how stable it was, almost fool-proof.

if someone thinks LSD is worse in snow than open diffs they aren't idiots, he's probably a salesman who's salary depends on selling you that car... it is the law of physics
that and I'm an offroad junkie, my second car and biggest passion are lifted jeeps (grand cherokee in particular ) and while there are tricks to making an open diff vehicle perform as well as a locked or LSD, they is probably a 0% chance they can be performed in an E92 but I don't think anyone of the thousands of ppl with E92's bought a 335i for snow, and that's what coolie means by "cool story" Last edited by ABerry; 12-20-2010 at 07:09 PM.. |

well, I just thought its gonna be different with snow tires....i cant even imagine how people drive with all-seasons.....maybe 5mph, and dont ever drive up hill....today i had lots of trouble getting up even a 10-15% street, not even a hill (from stop sign)

Hmm, I don't have problems with my Conti DWS's on my 330i. I'm not breaking any land speed records but I get where I'm going safely. Snow tires are even better but I'm fine with the AS tires.

I have owned several Jeeps (5 to be exact) and I think this car does really well in the snow. I was out in a blizzard last year with no troubles at all.

I have the same tires on my RWD E93 and just went out in the same storm that's hitting Boston and thought the car performed very well. I had to TRY to get it to break loose on some roads. The only scare was braking, ABS really makes braking in the snow worse.

I suggest you get yourself a real winter setup and report back....

Two cars come to mind:
1. Subaru WRX STi 2. Mitsubishi Evolution X Both killer off-road rally cars. Both with torque-vectoring differentials. Both capable of transferring power to any single, two, three, or four wheels, as necessary. TRANSLATION: A limited slip diff would help? Well Duh. It's designed to allow the car to put power to the ground in low-traction conditions.

You are comparing a Graspic DS-2 tire vs. a Wintersport M3 tire. Graspic DS-2 is a full out winter tire. Knobby, crappy in dry handling, but a beast in snow. More siping, more snow oriented compound, deeper tread, etc.....They are typically Q-rated (not rated for more than 100mph). They are not meant for performance driving. Think of them like SUV/LT tires. Wintersport M3 tire is a PERFORMANCE winter tire. V rated - 149mph. Lower tread depths, less siping, MUCH better dry performance. Not as good for snow, ice. Harder compounds to resist high speed heat buildup (hence the higher speed rating). I had an M3 in the snow with wintersport M3's. It did take off a bit better in the snow due to LSD, but turning, stopping and straight line stability are the same as my 335 with TS830 contis. I do not agree with your statement - I am able to compare the M3 vs. the 335 objectively, with the same type of performance winter tires on them. Your statement is like comparing off-road performance between a land rover with highway SUV tires vs. a Jeep with OOR tires and saying the Land Rover sucks off-road in comparison... |

1) As pointed out by anerbe, OP is basically comparing studless winter tires to high performance winter tires. Of course the Dunlop Wintersport M3's will lose that comparison in deep snow; they're in the high performance winter category with the LM-25's and such.... I'm not sure what's so puzzling about that... The only car he compared to the 335 with comparable tires was one equipped with Quattro.... And.... Yeah.... That shit is beast in the snow with winter tires. Again, not sure where the surprise here is.... I think the LSD helped plenty with the M3, but the tires are a world apart in deep snow or any significant amount of coverage.... 2) The 335 requires a lot of throttle modulation in conditions where there is a ton of snow/slush/crap all over the place, but in a different way than previous BMWs I've had. There's a lot of somewhat delayed and aggressive torque at tip-in. All of my previous N/A BMWs were much easier to control with the throttle, which is key in any RWD car when trying to drive through this shit, LSD or not. 3) Only now does OP have to drive carefully? I'm pretty sure he wasn't taking turns on snow caked roads with the pedal to the floor in the M3, DS2s or not.... IMO I'd want to outfit the 335 with heavier duty winter tires than the M3, not the other way around, due to the open diff and throttle. But I'm not going to argue against x-drive in the snow. X-drive plus snow tires in the snow is absolute beast. However, in the OP's case, I think he should have a) realized he had an open diff and what that meant (see innumerable threads here already), and b) should have realized that the Dunlop WS M3s aren't anywhere near as capable in those conditions as the DS2s. EDIT: Just for clarification purposes, I do have a 335 with Dunlop Wintersport M3s, and they aren't that bad in comparison to winter tires I've previously used. If I wanted more ability in deep snow, my next choice was the Blizzak WS-60s. But me choosing the WS M3s is not going to cause me to blame the car for it.
