luxury car marketing

Haven't gotten anything lately from BMW, last one was the $100 Thomas Pink gift card. Today, I got a thing in the mail from Jaguar, free Odyssey White Ice Putter for test drive, add'l 8 Callaway Golf irons if you buy or lease a XF, 13 clubs plus bag for XK/XJ.

It made me think of that guy who got $2500 denied because he was a day early on his 59k 3 series lease. It's like BMW is holding back while Jaguar is rolling out the red carpet.

You bet I'll go and get that putter for free.

I thought Ford owns Jaguar now?

OP, I think Jaguar is trying to sell its cars through incentives. BMW doesn't have too.

I believe BMW is the only auto maker to provide "free" maintenance with it's new car warranty. Free is in quotes because I'm sure you pay for it in the final cost of the car but look at comparable models from other auto companies? About the same price and no free maintenance.

Actually, Tata Motors owns Jaguar now. And Land Rover.

^Ahh that's right. Tata seems to be growing rapidly. Have you seen their stock lately?

Look at this 6 month trend

Correct, Ford sold Jaguar and Land Rover to Tata Motors of India although they are still manufactured in England.

What would you call 0.9% financing and $1,500 cash back? Sounds like incentives to me. Also I believe VW offers "free" maintenance. BMW sells a lot more cars than Jaguar and Jaguar is probably getting aggressiv to gain market share,

Yea but every car company does something like that.....I haven't seen many give away gifts like that.

Never knew VW offered "free" maintenance as well.

I think that the VW maintenance is fairly recent. Audi had free maintenace several years ago (before BMW offered it) but they stopped after a year of two.

Heck, even Toyota does it now (free scheduled maintenance).

The golf clubs/other-swag angle would definitely pique my interest.

I suppose that free maintenance and golf clubs, etc, are nice perks but those in themselves would not sway me to buy a particular car.

Gimmicks don't sell cars, cars sell cars. Who cares about a putter.

If it's a quality product, it'll sell. Only suckers fall for that putter crap.

Jaguars are gorgeous IMO. Very classic and elegant, like a land rover.

Marketing is like glass 1/2 full, 1/2 empty. What good is a free putter when all you care to do is sit in front of a computer and wait for the next thread to chime in on? LOL

When BMW offered me a $100 gift card for Thomas Pink, I took it. The problem was, the shirts start at $185, so the gift card wasn't really too good. A $149 putter or $899 set of clubs (they say $2500 but I don't see how Diablo Edges are $2500) when you lease or buy a car, that's smart marketing. The grumpy old men are the ones who say, pfffffff, I wont buy or lease a car based on a freebie. But people sell time shares and condos based on this method. And a quick search showed that 1/2 the time the salesperson was willing to give out the code needed to get the promo without driving the car. Next Thu. when my car is in for service, I'll walk over to the Jaguar sales, and with a little luck, pick up the code. If not, I'll take the XJ out for a spin (though I'd prefer not to).

Jaguar = fail
Aston Martin rear ends
Bentley front ends
Porsche pricing
Mediocre performance.

Good for luxury though. I guess they hit their mark when most Jag drivers are older.

It was $1500 not $2500, also had he "got in on the deal by leasing it one day later" his lease deal would have been worse with the $1500 rebate.

It is like Jag saying, come in today you will get free golf shit deal just kicked in today, but your car will cost $2500 more today than yesterday.

So much fail in this post. The XJ, XF and XK are excellent cars in every way. They could be a bit more reliable but are undeniably beautiful in looks and performance. My favorite is the XF which in its base model has 385 HP. I'd say that gives pretty damn good performance in a 4000 pound car. It's a very strong competitor to the new 5 series.

I have seen a number of posts here and elsewhere that claim that Jaguar copied Aston Martin styling. The reality is that Ian Callum was chief of design for both marques while they were both owned by Ford so if he copied anyone he copied himself. In at least on case (Aston DB7 and Jaguar XK8) the cars shared a common platform. Jaguar owners do tend to be older than BMW owners but there is is usually a direct correltation betweent the price of a car and the age of the average owner. I would guess if you compare competive models such as BMW 7 Series to Jaguar XJ the average age if the owners is close,
