Time for a change of wheel colour? - Advice

Now the winters are on, the 'summer' factory MV3's are in the shed.

I'm planning to get them refurbed and recoated before spring to get off some curb marks and corrosion (not to mention the hideous porridge thick OE plastic coating).

But I quite fancy changing from the rather dull BMW silver / sludge grey.

My MV3 reps are hyper silver and they look much better than standard it maked the spokes look thinner too, but what about going for a smoke chrome, or antracite?

The car is silver, so I'm not sure about darker wheels?

Nobody say black please, that's so last year

Mike, I had my G-Powers done in a smoked chrome by Lepsons, looks good and hides the dirt very well.

Charcoal/anthracite looks good as does Satin matt black, but the former might just be 'so last year'.

For a silver car I'd go charcoal/anthracite with a black/silver centre cap (NOT cf)

I think the smoked chrome would look good against silver paint IMO

I would go with bright yellow wheels so that it looks like a Raleigh Burner.

Yeh, I haven't seen any of the edition wheels in the flesh, but is it a sort of smoke chrome or just a darker grey?

I got my last wheels on a Leon K1 done in Black Chrome by the Wheel Specialist. First thing I would never use the wheel specialist again but I realise they are all different. Second the colour looked great to begin with. Black and smoke chrome effects are created the same and you can have any shade inbetween. The wheels are powder coated black then sprayed silver only from the front creating the effect. Black chrome has more passes than smoke so the wheel is more silver looking. Mine had around ten passes, I'm sure. The problem comes when you get stone chips. They show very black through the silver and they very quickly look tatty.

HTH.

Did they wet spray over powder? You can get that effect with just powder, the inter coat adhesion isn't great its not a good idea to wet spray over powder coating.

I'm sure they wet sprayed over the powder coat. It wouldn't suprise me if this is the incorrect way to do it. I wasn't left with a good impression of The Wheel Specialist.

Yea it's not the best idea, powder coating is not designed as a undercoat stupid really as you can buy powder to get the shadow/2 tone colour there not cheap though!!

I've seen the new anthracite MV3's.

Vile is all I can say, the MV3 just isn't angular enough to suit the edgy machined metal look that an anthracite gives it.

I'll be going brighter and sharper with a hyper silver to match my reps which look great against silver body.

Cheers for all your input - looks like I'm taking the easy/safe route!
