Yesterday was nuts! I got stuck in an intersection for a few light cycles trying to get any sort of traction with my summer tires. Gonna order some winter tires today hopefully!

I had the Michelin Ice Xi2 put on the day before that crap hit, the car is unstoppable. The traction was redic, didnt lose traction a single time with the DTC. Later in the night i went into a parking lot and turned the DTC/DSC off and had some fun. Now the big question is, should I bother taking all this salt off my car, the roads are caked with the stuff.

Definetly!!!! Unless you want to let it sit and slowly eat at your clearcoat to the point that you would have to take it to a detailer. I wash mine every chance I get, of course when its not snowing.

It's amazing how bad the summer tires are in the winter. My car was parked at the Marc train station and snow had already fallen during the day. It was difficult enough to maneuver the car out of the station with freezing rain and ice on the road.

Time to either get all-season tires or winter performance tires. Not sure which to get yet.

If you're going to pony up for a "winter" set of wheels/tires, you should go with regular winter tires and forego the performance winter tires. If I'm not mistaken, Maryland tends to see a lot of icing conditions like you experienced the other day, rather than heavy snow. That being the case, normal winter tires will serve your purposes better because performance winter tires are really intended more for snow rather than icy conditions. My $.02!

IIRC, the only stock Goodyears for the 2008 were the NCT5 RFTs which came with the SP. As a summer touring tire they are decent (although expensive) tires - but not for snow.

I replaced mine with Cont iDWS non RFT all seasons and the ride is much improved.

Having used both studless ice/snow and performance winters on an E46 through 9 DC area winters, I'd respectfully disagree and recommend the performance snows. We have had little ice in the past 5 years and normally receive only about 10" of snow for the entire season.

The "regular (studless) snows" make the car feel imprecise, sort of like you are steering through jello on dry roads - which is most of the time in our area. I especially liked the good handling Dunlop Wintersport M3s, which are now available in a RFT version should you be so inclined.

The main reason that we got 50"+ of snow last winter is that I got tired of doing the semi annual changeovers and opted for all-seasons. My punishment was sliding off my driveway into a woodpile!

I ordered a set of 225/40R18 Blizzak WS60's to wrap all four of my M-package wheels from tirerack. The Blizzak LM-60's have a higher speed rating but apparently aren't as good for snow and ice traction. I took the safer (and cheaper) route. I don't need all out performance in the winter. I'll leave that for some nice sticky summer tires.

If anyone's wondering why I'm keeping my M-wheels for the winter... I got the wheel/tire warranty from my dealership at a decent employee price so I figured I'd use these for winter and get some aftermarket wheels for the summer. The warranty covers all wheels and tires (as far as I was told). Good stuff! Oh, and I ordered the tires through my dealership (BMW of Sterling) so I could get whole sale pricing and after freight and taxes I saved a whopping $6!!! hahaha... Good to know I can make good use of my employee discounts !
