330i Residual Heat
Hey guys,
I just bought the one of the last remaining 2006 330i + Premium + Sports, Black on Black. i am very happy with it, considering i am coming from a '98 Honda CRV. I will post pictures soon as soon as I get it washed. One question: How do I use the Residual Heat from the Engine to warm up the car? In the Honda there was no problem.I don't need to turn on the fan, just press the button that let's the outside air come in and turn the heat. But when I press the "Rest" button (i read the manual, it should use the Residual Heat from the engine"), but nothing happens. No signal to indicate anything. and on the same note, How do i let the outside air come in?? The car has 13 miles from test drive when i bought it. I plan to change oil at around 500miles. Since dealer ain't paying for it, How much would it cost? Thanks. |

It should work as indicated. I always hit the button on my way out of the car and warm air starts to waft in soon after. The Rest button should light up.

Changing the oil at 500 miles is a waste of money. They don't use break-in oil any more. I did my first change at 5K. I think the oil and filter came to about $50.00.

+1, just press the "REST" button (as long as you've driven the car long enough)
please read the manual, you can familiarize yourself with all the features of your car by reading it

It won't heat up the car, only keep it warm as long as possible.
As for letting the outside air in, there are four windows and possibly a sunroof. Or, pres the button to the left of the REST button (the one with the A inside a circle next to a circle) until the LED turns off. This allows outside air to flow in. If you then push the button until the LED above the A and circle turns on then the outside air still comes in but gets blocked if the sensor detects pollutants in which case it recirculates inside air until the pollutants are no longer present. If the LED above the circle by itself is lit then the recirculation of inside air is constant.

Oil change: Expect about $100-140 at your dealer, maybe $75-90 at an independent BMW shop. It's 7 quarts of synthetic oil, which is expensive. I'd say you might want to wait longer than 500 miles to change the oil, but it's up to you. Maybe right after break-in, around 1200 miles. I did an early oil change at around 4000 miles. You'll love your 330i.

All the above is correct. If your car is turned off for a while and then the REST function doesn't work. Just turn your car to the "ON" position (no need to start the engine, ie, put in keyfob, press start/stop engine button) and then the REST function should work again. At least that's how it works on my car. But of course the air that's coming out isn't very warm at all.
Last note, the temperature has to be below 25C in order for the REST function to work. |

About the oil change, even though I feel it's probably a waste scientifically speaking, I plan on doing it at around 1,500. We all know BMW does not recommend it nor require it, but if you talk to any car club people they will do it after break-in.
The M6 I lifted the hood on had a sticker to do a 2000 km or 1200 mi service, and my service mgr. said that if I plan on keeping the car and do not lease but own, and it were his car, he would personally change the oil at 1500, mostly for peace of mind. |
