Cool - I hope it will be offered here in the US. It may not seem like a big deal, but this really adds to my customer loyalty feelings and keeps me willing to be an early model adopter.

Can anybody confirm this? I've been told you absolutely cannot retrofit the Combox. I really doubt this information is accurate

This is my understanding as well. However, if it could be done, my understanding is that it's both hardware and software that would need to be addressed, and I can't imagine that the parts and labor would be free.

my sales rep mentioned to me that I should be expecting a "software flash" during my first service. I had no idea about the capabilities of the combox nor did I ask anything about it. She came out of no where and brought it up. If it's the truth - it would be SWEEEEEEET!

I'm *certainly* no expert on computers, automobiles (or anything else) but owning a Playsation 3 and having seen the many features/capabilities Sony's been able to add to it through periodic internet "updates" I wonder if it's right to "absolutely" believe the update mentioned by the OP can't be completed.

Just my 2c worth....

Well, because combox is a new piece of hardware which allows new type of interface and communications.

It's like asking PS3 to be software updated to allow you to play Move games without the hardware (Eye and Move controllers). Not likely.

And to be able to get a free new combox retrofit from BMW is like Sony or Microsoft giving your one year old console a free Move bundle or Kinect..... again, not very likely.

I agree 100%. I think the OP misunderstood or was given the wrong information.

I'm hoping this is true, I have a WK34 build and was told my car would have the combox on it, unfortunately on delivery it wasn't there.

I contacted my CA to have him look into it more for me. (FINGERS CROSSED)

Trust me, it's a VERY SORE subject with me and the local dealer, as well as corporate in NJ, faced with not having the combox or waiting another 2 months for them to build another car I made the INCORRECT decision to take the car.

Just 32 more payments

BMW in NJ does not care

As far as my experience goes, BMW in NJ does not give a rats a$$ about this issue.

They falsely advertised that several of the features (album cover art and bluetooth streamming) were available on the 5 series as of June. They were not. When i confronted BMW about this, they simply played stupid and gave me the run around.

I will be taking legal action against them, and they just lost a customer from over 20 years for life.

I forgot to mention that the features i mentioned are only available with the combox.

My vehicle was manufactured in July.

I must admit some confusion. Is a combox retrofit going to be available through the dealers in the US or is it a custom shop retrofit? How $$$ do we think this is going to be? As to timing, what you were told sounds optimistic considering that an iPhone 4 snap in adapter is not available yet for a six month old product.

Combox is both hardware and software. Combox allows one to use a standard Apple iPod cable to connect the iPod to the car, in lieu of the BMW Y Cable. It will be interesting to see if this rumor is true, particularly since a hardware mod is required.
