I asked someone from BMW NA this question a couple of months ago. His answer was "don't hold your breath".
I'm anxious to see what kind of fuel economy the 28i will get. With the 8 speed, it might not be too far from the 35d.

I think it will come once the X5 is upgraded to the 40d. They won't want potential buyers buying the X3 35d vs. X5 35d.
I hope it happens before or at the LCI and it will be mine! If not, I will get an X5 35d and be almost as happy.

I think the sales of the X5 35d are sucking wind in the USA.
I may consider one, as it might lease more favorably than the F25 X3 in the next few months.

I'd love the 35d (or even a 30d) with the eight speed, but I wonder whether the trans can handle the torque.

Most of the reviews so far mention that BMW brass indicate that a diesel x3 is most likely in our future (USA). I drove a 335d for 15k before I sold it in preparation for a x3d or possibly x1d purchase.
The 335d is an AWSOME car. The engine is a modern marvel. Including dpf burns I got an easy 42 mpg on the hwy. at 60-65 mph. My average was over 33 mpg in mixed driving. A x3 35d or x3 20d would be a hot seller for BMW. I sold the 335d because I need awd in the winter and the versatility of a suv...plus the wife likes to sit up high in traffic. I looked at a X3 28i today. If it drives as good as it looks BMW has a winner...bring on the Diesel! |

I hope they bring the diesel soon. I was impressed when I heard that the 35i was rated at 19/26. I figured that the 28i would be better, and I'd feel good about driving a more efficient machine. With 19/25 on the 28i, I'll probably wait for the diesel or shop elsewhere. The 28i's ratings are a major disappointment. I can't recall any case when a smaller engine got lower mileage than the more powerful option.

In Norway you've can order 30d now production start approx Q2 or Q3 the fuel combustion as BMW`s figures says is that 30d use about 25% less than 28i mixed drive EU norm.

I think x3 35d will wait for some time. In Europe there is already an x3 30d (April 2011 onwards) with 6.2s from 0-100km/h (258hp, 560Nm), having a 35d would come to close to 3.5i time of 5.7s (unless there is a 3.5is in the future). Having said that, if BMW decides to release a x3 35d I would order it immediately

Will the mileage be better if they bring the 30d or 35d to the US? I noticed the X5 35d gets the same overall milage as the X3 35i, 19 city/26 hwy so not sure if it's worth the wait for diesel. Would the 35d in the X3 get a big improvement? I'm all for being as green as possible and would be willing to wait for diesel if they'd bring something like the 20d which gets 40/50 mpg for sure. While I love the horsepower and acceleration of the 35i, I'd be willing to sacrifice a bit of that for better mpg. After all most of my commuting is in heavy traffic to work or for just getting from point A to point B anyways.

With the extra cost of diesel at the pump over gas prices, I would only consider an X3 D if it got over 27-30 mpg, otherwise I still like the 335D but not the auto. Touring would make it have more storage capacity than an X3 with better fuel economy!!

The x5 35d blows the 30i away in real world mpg. Consumer reports lists the 30i at 21 mpg on there 150 mile trip test the 35d at 28 mpg. Their test results for the 335d are pretty close to what I experienced in 15k of mixed driving. EPA window sticker rated my 335d at 36 hwy. In real world driving I got 42mpg.
The x5 is 2" wider, 3" taller and weighs 800 lbs more than the new x3. It has a six speed trans and hydro steering vs the new 8 speed and electric steering. bmwblog.com has an article about the soon to be released in europe x3 30d rated at 39.2 (I'm guessing imperial) mpg= 32.53 us mpg. The 35d is basically the same engine (both n57) with an extra turbo and waste gate. Based on all of the above I feel very confident that a x3 30/35d would be good for 30 mpg in mixed driving 36 mpg hwy with a light right foot. The great thing is it will be capable of 6 sec 0-60 times |

X5 is about 700 pounds heavier and only has a 6 speed transmission for the diesel. I would expect well over 30 mpg highway if they put the 8 speed in with the weight difference.

Well its actually almost 1,000 pounds heavier 5,200 verses 4,200. X5 diesel is 19/26 while 3 series is 23/36 at 3,800 pounds. If you split the difference it would be 21/31 assuming they stayed with the 6 speed but why would they.

Now that sounds like it might be worth waiting for if this is indeed the case.
Anybody know how long it might take for the X3 diesels to come to the US? Do you think we could see them sometime in 2011? or is it more likely 2012 or later? |

x5 35i=4960 lbs
X5 35d=5192lbs x3 35i= 4222lbs+232lbs= x3 35d=4454 5192-4454=738lbs difference between x5 35d and x3 35d As mentioned epa #s are low when it comes to diesels. The 2011 x3 30d has the 8 speed trans. It should be noted that it is possible to run taller gears in the 8 speed vs the 6 speed AND the trans itself is more efficient. Last edited by e90diesel; 12-23-2010 at 10:21 PM.. |
