The Hofmeister kink is described on the BMW website and is always mentioned in some article or another when the new models come out.

Yep. That's a design staple of BMW. Note how many companies are trying to copy that element into their "sport sedan" designs now.

For your next homework assignment, please describe for us what the roundel represents. (the 'roundel' is the BMW logo with the blue and white checked pattern in a circle). I'm not saying that in a smart-assy way. That was one of the fun things I learned and figured you'd like that research too.

BMW should focus less attention on the kink and more attention on getting both sides of the metal molding to line up!

BMW stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke or Bavarian Motor Company. The company was established in 1913 and based in Munich, Germany. It started out as an aero engine manufacturer, hence the company logo. The logo comprised of four quadrants of alternating white and blue color. It is a stylized representation of an airplane propeller spinning against the clear blue sky. The logo represents a white propeller blade against a blue sky. It reflects the origins of BMW as a maker of military aircraft engines during WWI. Also, white and blue are the traditional colors of Bavaria.

I did my research. Now only if i applied myself this much in high school

There was a post a month or two ago with a well-researched PDF that strongly disputed the propeller theory. I was too lazy to read it then, and I'm too lazy to search for it now

And as for their heritage, check out one of their first airplane engines, as seen at the BMW Museum in Germany. (See Sig)

lol, I hope you didn't apply yourself exactly like this in high school. The above is like word for word from the official description... plagiarism

... but yeah, that's what the Roundel symbolizes

I had a chance to talk BMW design with Chris Bangle last year, and he made a big point of keeping certain key BMW design elements in his designs while not being afraid to make changes in other areas.

While on the subject of BMW design, if you ever have a chance to hear him explain the reasoning behind the trunk of the 6 and 7 series, you'd gain a new appreciation for the "wierd" look.

I think Bangle is a genius. It's very easy to criticize new design concepts and originality... but look how many copies are hitting the road now - the new S Class included.

The genie behind the 6 (and therefore also the 7) series is a Dutch bloke. Adrian van Hooydonck. He is now the leading man (read chief-designer) of the BMW designs, Bangle has moved up to be chief-designer of the BMW group.

van Hooydonck was also the chief designer of the E90 and E91. Not positive about the E92/E93... but more than likely it was he.

For me it's just the way around. Luckily we all have different taste, or else we all drove the same car
