Break-In Period Question

My 335i E90 is coming in later this month. I live in L.A. but bought the car in the S.F. Bay Area.

I have to go up there to close the deal. Question is do I drive the new car down or have it trucked down?

The way I see it: it would be a great opportunity to get to know the car if I drove it, but then I'm worried about the break-in period staying on I-5 for so long. The down side of getting it trucked down is that it adds an opportunity for damage to occur and by then the car will officially be mine.

Thoughts?

Drive it. Get off I-5 and take some back roads, or vary the shifts between 4th-6th during your drive. You'll be fine.

Vary your RPM/speed (no cruise control) and don't go above 100 mph or 4500 RPM. You'll be fine.

put 100 miles on it, and then drive it like you stole it!

100 miles of varies RPMS and when your coming up to a stop let the RPMs wind down rather than put in nuetral.

im in the same position, im buying my car almost 200 miles away (they can get it 1 month sooner than local + i have friends in that city i will visit when i pick it up)

i was planning on doing what everyone suggested, vary rpms by regularly changing gears @ the same speed, as well as slowing down to 70 from time to time then speeding again

i also plan on stopping every 50 or so miles and taking it off an exit and driving around for 10 or so minutes in more city like style

why someone would take their car out of gear while decelerating is beyond me, thats the main advantage of fuel saving with a manual car

For best results do the following...
a) go to S.F to get car
b) open car door
c) sit in driver's seat
d) insert key fob
e) put car into D or 1st
f) floor gas petal
g) drive it like you stole it and don't look back

It is like regenerative braking on electric cars, it takes the carbon from the air and converts it back to gasoline that then goes back to the tank as pure gasoline.

My tank acually overflowed coming down a mountain one afternoon. So never fill up at the top of a mountin range.

WOW REALLY?!

but seriously, you should just drive it down. I think varying RPMs make the most sense.

Thanks for all the advice guys. Dealer actually quoted me $250 to truck it down, but didn't say if it was an open or closed truck (which would help prevent some damage, I guess). I actually do have to physically go up to the Bay Area anyway so I guess my main question is about the break-in period.

I understand that some of the parts are a little "rough" and may need to loosen up during break-in but has anyone actually heard of someone having a problem because they didn't observe all the break-in "rules"? Is the car gonna have problems or die early?

I don't think anyone disputes a hard break in shortens engine life. The question is how much it shortens the life for your specific engine.

So what is a hard break-in? Tearing it up, high revs, etc.

Seems like driving at a steady speed with cruise control, etc would be less hard?
