I have active steering, and I may never buy another car without it. I love it to death.

Coincidentaly, I work as a BMW technician. I drive BMW's Allllll day. I've driven countless BMW's with and without Active Steering, and I MUCH prefer active steering.

I have active steering and love it! This is my 4th BMW, and I've owned an e46M3 so I have some pretty good comparisons. My advice is that you will probably love it once you get used to it, and will not want to ever go back. On the other hand, it you don't get it you won't miss what you haven't experienced. Active steering gives you that "go-kart" feeling, and if you drive in the city as I do it makes your driving a lot easier.

I absolutely love my active steering. I'd trade every other option on my car for it. Search for my "Audi S4" post for more details.

I thought that it felt nice to drive, but I still vote no. One more thing that adds weight, complexity w/o enough value.

I love it, thought at first I wouldn't need it, now I wouldn't get one without it.

I didn't set out to get active steering, but when I was looking for a good deal on an '06 330i the only one I could find with my other "must have" options also had active steering. I have to say I'm a complete convert -- love the ease of low-speed maneuvering.

I've never tried it personally, but all the press articles I have ever read, and this includes most US, UK & French motoring magazines, advise against it.

Ask if your SA have one you can try. I can't say either way since I've never driven one with AS. Can't bash it if you haven't tried it.

i drove one today and i gotta say i really liked it a lot!!!mainly b/c it still felt like bmw steering though about 5% lighter and not dramatically diff from normal bmw steering which was my main concern!!!! it just felt like the steering was tweaked a little not a lot just the right amount in my opinion, more sporty for sure!!!!! deff a race inspired option as it is similar to a formula 1 turning ratio lock to lock..... it was 12-12 lock to lock you can make one full turn of the steering wheel!!!!! it was super agile and not in the slightest way fake or out of control!!!!!!! personally i think it is a great sporty option!!!!!! i hope i love it on the new car!!!! only option i don't have is serius sat radio as in i have 500gb of music i will be using my ipod through the adapter and we have plenty of stations here in Chicago so i am not worried for sports and such!!!! i just cannot wait to add the m aero kit hopefully it will be out soon!!!! thx again for all who voted!!!!!!!!!!

Ya i'm starting to regret not getting it as well...
Though i have one question why is it that if it's such a great option and it doesn't take away from that bmw feel , i'ts not an option in any of the M cars
That definitely says something to me.

Weight. Adds a bit of weight to the front end, once you calculate the weight of the planetary gearset on the steering column, and new fluid lines, and a new pump, etc. It would throw off the front to rear weight balance of the M, and also just add that few extra pounds. When you look at, say, the M3 Comp, with the carbon fiber bumpers... a few pounds is priceless to them.

Ok i see... Thankx Matt for the info.
And i suppose that this added weight doesn't really make a difference in the 335i?
Oh well since this will be my first Bmw i will enjoy it as is but I will definitely look into it thouroughly for my next Bmw. I just wish i could have driven one before placing my order.

It honestly is not enough weight for most people to EVER notice or care, but Motorsport Division is a whole different kind of people. And thank god for that, and M cars. LOL

I remember long before I ordered someone had posted up to date numbers on what color, what options were ordered on the e92. I believe active steering and the laser cruise control numbers stuck out like a sore thumb, i.e. very few orders for those two options. Personally, I took the majority's word for it that it's not an enthusiasts' option. When dealers don't have test cars that have it, we really cannot judge for ourselves, right? But I love the steering on my 335 without. Is it better with active steering? Maybe I'll never know.

I do know it was not a hit when it came out on the 5, and there were bugs and complaints about overboost and dead on center feel. As I understand it, it's not even EPS like many cars have now. I kid you not, drive a Chevy Cobalt, the steering is quite surprisingly good.

Going back to the 3 Series, the question in my mind would be whether the regular steering is lacking in some way, so much so that it needs a $1200 makeover? The answer becomes pretty obvious now.

I've had my e90 330 w/ AS for 18 months now. It great option for real world everyday driving. It would probably benefit 90% of M owners if it were available on their cars ... especially all the guys we see here in South Florida in M5s creeping along at 10 - 15 mph in the morning commute...
