Great News for You Guys - BMW F30 3 series to Use Hydraulic Steering

According to N16E who is having mega problems with steering on his F10 "Not sure how true/relevant it is, but the (BMW Factory)technician also told me BMW had dropped EPS in favour of Hydraulic on the 3 series (unless specified)".

The F10 has been roasted in the auto press for lousy steering on the base F10 steering. It is all coming out now that the F10 is just a guinea pig for the better selling F30.

I'll believe it when I see it, but I sure hope so.

IMO the EPS is all that really is wrong with the new F10.

Also, hopefully the F30 will retain an option for an actual sport suspension, not just relying on ARS to handle better.

I assume you are referring to the North American markets only? Many "rest of world" E9X models already have electric power steering as part of the Efficient Dynamics program (maybe all 4 cyl models?), and I would expect that to continue with the F3X. My Dad had an E92 320i with electric steering which I didn't particularly care for, so I for one am happy to hear that they will retain a hydraulic system.

Ahh hydraulic steering, how I love you... I'm glad they are retaining it, I might actually wait for the F30 and skip buying a 335i.

Hydraulic steering is also one reason I love my current car, my parents both have Toyota/Lexus products...

Might have missed things but haven't seen a single complaint about EPS. After 4 yrs of having it, i think its pretty good, and i don't need the constant losses of a hydraulic steering pump at 20 kmls/year. The not assisted high speed feel is ok to me, the assisted low speed is welcome.

I'm pretty sure my car has electric power steering, and I still think the steering is pretty damn good. I don't think the assist mechanism has that much to do with the steering feel, rather its the bracing and stiffness of the steering column and suspension components. All hydraulic power steering is going to do is add more parasitic drag to the engine and (marginally) impact fuel economy.

Do you have an '06 325i? If so you don't have electric PS.

In this pic, in the center right-most part of the image, do you see a little reservoir with a green ring top? That's where your hydraulic PS fluid is.

It's certainly possible that BMW will continue to use the hydraulic steering in the 2 and 3 series lines (2 will be the coupe/cabrio of the next gen 1er), but one thing being dismissed here is the possibility of a less boosted/assisted EPS, like the one found on the Z4 sDrive35is. I must admit I haven't driven either of the Z4s, but from reviews I've read, the is version has much better/very good steering, and the i version does not. So it's possible that BMW will use a less boosted EPS in the 3er, since all of it is just software anyways.

I would only consider buying the M version of the F30 / F32. Efficient dynamics doesn't really interest me. I think the M cars will always have hydraulic power steering.
