Crown Auto - strut brace & split armrest

Ok ok I snapped... today I called Crown Automotive and ordered the OEM strut brace and split center armrest in lemon dakota leather for my 330xi, the rep thinks he should have the parts by Monday which would then be shipped to me by UPS. I don't know why I'm posting this so soon but I felt that I had to confess to somebody that I just wasted money, and it's all BMW's fault for allowing these two items to exist in the first place!

I'll update this thread with photos and the total price (parts, shipping to Canada, duties, fees, etc...) as soon as I receive the package, hopefully by the end of next week.

AHHH!!! Stupid UPS!

I've been home all evening, just checked the tracking on my package and at 7:32pm this is what it said, "THE RECEIVER DID NOT HAVE FUNDS AVAILABLE ON THE 1ST DELIVERY ATTEMPT. A 2ND DELIVERY ATTEMPT WILL BE MADE"

Bloody hell, the driver must have felt like going home and decided to make excuses for his remaining packages. I'm going to have to call UPS tomorrow morning and raise hell.

Ok well it happened again today at 6:15pm, "THE RECEIVER DID NOT HAVE FUNDS AVAILABLE ON THE 2ND DELIVERY ATTEMPT. A 3RD DELIVERY ATTEMPT WILL BE MADE".

So I called UPS for the third time and this time got on the line with a polite rep, she compared the shipping address to the address that the driver had logged and for some reason, he's been trying to deliver it to the wrong house for two days in a row... They make deliveries until around 8pm so she contacted the local dispatch and hopefully it will still make it tonight.

I don't much appreciate having to pay taxes and duties but thank goodness for it this time, otherwise whoever is living down the street might have actually taken delivery!

It crossed my mind, but I don't think UPS Standard to Canada offers that coverage, shipping for both parts (8lb) was US$25.00 btw.

So anyway, by 8pm still no call so I phone UPS again and spoke to another gentleman who said he would have someone check why the service centre did not call me within the hour window. At 8:25 I got a call from someone higher up the customer service hierarchy who politely told me that the first two reps were mis-informed, in that the cut-off time for inquiries at the local centre is 6pm, anything after that is not handled the same day. But she called herself and was told that apparently the printed waybill is correct, but the possibly handwritten address was either a mess or smudged, and for some reason the driver didn't check the waybill.

Long story short, I'll get my package tomorrow, and as a sign of good will, the brokerage fees amounting to $63 have been waived, so I'll only have to pay taxes which work out to $77.98. Thats a helluva lot better than reimbursing me for shipping fees

canucklion, here's that break down for you:

Strut Brace - US$235.04
Split Leather Armrest - US$236.34
UPS Standard (8lb) - US$25.00

Amount charged to credit card by Crown Auto - US$496.38

UPS brokerage fee - CAD$63.00 (thats killer, I'm so glad it was waived despite the extra two days)
Taxes - CAD$77.98

Grand Total = US$496.38 + CAD$140.98

I bought the trim piece (which includes the sockets and wiring) from my local dealer for $38 plus tax, and followed the DIY posted here on how to install, works great!

Here's the link to RealOEM for this part:
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...25&hg=51&fg=35
What you get is item #3 as pictured there.

If you have black, lemon or terra, the part no. is 51167150155

For beige, 51167150157

For grey, 51167150156

Nice mods Greg!

Those armrests sure are tempting... I keep leaning back to reach for the fixed armrest...

Nice...your interior is beautiful!!

Please post feedback/findings on the strut bar/brace mod. Was there a reason you wanted the bar? I am thinking of this mod to add (needed) rigidity to my front end.

The armrest is really really nice, I myself always ended up resting my elbow right at the edge of the fixed armrest so now this makes for a much more enjoyable driving experience. It doesn't just slide forward though, it rises up about an inch too so that it clears the parking brake when in use. So now when I drive with my hand resting on the shifter, I use the left and extended side of the armrest, when I need to use the iDrive controller, then my arm naturally drops to the right side so it all works out very well.

Don't forget it also comes with a spring, so the armrest will automatically open when not clicked shut. I find it really adds to the luxury feel of the car.

Thanks. I don't care what other people have to say Re: strut brace only useful if you autocross... the thing really helps add to the rigidity of the car. I have a feeling the effect is more profound on my xi as there are another 200lb or so at the front. Just turning into a plaza for example from a road, I feel the front is much stiffer at the point that the two front wheels jump the tiny lip of the curb; instead of the front shaking left to right, it's totally solid now and just goes up and down. I also notice a difference when making a turn while going slightly downhill, it takes the corner much smoother without any wobble.
