Nokia N & E series: it's BMW's fault they're not working with bluetooth
The reason Nokia N & E series do not work with the BMW bluetooth
carkit is because BMW carkits have a bug in their L2CAP protocol. Symbian 8.1 onwards supports the new version of L2CAP, and various carkits including BMW claim to support it but go wrong when you enable it. Older versions support only the basic L2CAP version, which would have been the most common version in use when those car kits went to market. This info is coming from inside Nokia/Symbian. So don't blame your brand new Nokia N or E series phone but BMW. I wonder if BMW can fix this with a progman update. Would be nice to if they can/ I'm curious also how one can go about contacting them and open some sort of a support case so that they can fix it - one can only dream |

started bitching to him about my Nokia E50 and their crappy OS and how it's not working with the car's bluetooth while my other 3 Nokias work fine. He promised to get to the bottom of this and find out why. So that was his answer after looking into it. Now if we could only get BMW to fix it... PS: sent you a PM as well. |

Any more news regarding this N-series phones from Nokia? The N75 is about to come out here in America and it would be interesting to see if it would work with our cars.
Thanks in advance. |

Well...guess what I found out today. My service loaner, a BMW 5-series, works perfectly with my Nokia E61i! This gives me the impression that the inability to pair the E and N Series Nokias can be fixed with a software update to the BMW 3-Series. It does not appear to be a problem with the phones alone. Now, does anyone have these phone working in their 3-series? If so, we need to find out if there is a different software version in the cars that have it working so the rest of us can have it too...my old 8300 BlackBerry, my 8800, and my 8320 have all worked...not my E61i.

When you say it works with the E61i, does that include address book sync? My Nokia E61 works fine with my E92 335i except for address book sync.

Some time ago, Andre posted about Nokia software being available for some of their mobiles, to allow phonebook transfer to the E9x.
The link to the appropriate Nokia page is here. The update is a Nokia release & is intended to allow phonebook transfer from several Nokia phones to the Nokia 810 car phone (read as the BMW Bluetooth system). Looking at the Nokia info, the software update should work for the following phones: S60 3rd edition devices: Nokia E50, E60, E61, E61i, E62, E70, E90 Communicator, N71, N73, N77, N75, N76, N80, N91, N91 8GB, N92, N93, N95, 3250, 5500 Sport, 5700 XpressMusic, and 6290 S60 2nd edition and S80 devices: Nokia N70, N72, N90, 3230, 6260, 6600, 6620, 6630, 6670, 6680, 6681, 6682, 7610, 9300, 9300i, and 9500 Communicator S60 1.2 edition devices: Nokia 3600, 3620, 3650, 3660, N-Gage, and N-Gage QD If you have any of these mobiles & are having problems accessing the phone's addressbook, then download the appropriate file into your mobile, delete the BMW/Nokia bluetooth pairing in both the phone & in the car, install & run the software in the phone & re-pair the phone with the car. You should now have the ability to access your phonebook in the car. All the best. Viv

Great tip for Nokia N-series
@vivekk
Great tip! Thanx for the link! After downloading and installing the "downloading application" for my N80 (symbian 3rd edition) the adressbook is visible! And even better, it shows (between brackets) the type of number (home, mobile etc.). Too bad i just bought a snap-in adapter for my old Razer. The BMW-dealer didn't have a solution for the N80. I'll tip him him so he can spread the news Thx again... |

Unfortunately, in my own personal experience, most dealers don't know much about the 'technical' aspects of the cars they sell- they use this forum to find the answers to customers' questions! Perhaps you should sell your snap-in adaptor to your dealer & tell him where he can put it?! Viv |

Interesting piece of info. But I haven't been able to pair my E50 with my 330
yet. I plan on downloading the latest firmware for the E50 and I'm due for an iDrive update. If after all that I still can't pair the phones then I'll either give up or get another phone maybe although my Nokia 6310 pairs up fine. |

Unfortunately I have tried this Nokia software with my Nokia E61 and it doesn't work with E92 335i. I have heard it does work with the Nokia E61i however.

I think i am missing something simple...... Ok - deleted Pairing on my N95 & BMW (e91, 320d Jan '07 build), dowloaded Nokia software and run the software on my phone. Not much happens - it just says 'Processing,,,,,,,,' for ages then the screen exits. I then re-pair with BMW and phone pairs ok (as it did before), BUT no address book. If i open the 'Download Contacts' app whilst paired, it still says 'Processing,,,,,,,,' but nothing else. Am i being stooooopid? Can someone please help me with this? Oh - PS, n95 running latest firmware, but same issue with previous firmware too. Ta. |

I get exactly the same problem with a Nokia E61. It seems to be hit and miss depending on the combination of car software and phone software.

Will get the car S/W upgraded when she goes in for the first service (another 5k so not far off) and take it from there. In the meantime, i am manually forcing each entry into the car. Take bloody ages!!! |
